Good GCSE grades will boost your earning power
STUDENTS who opened their GCSE results last week could see their earnings increase by almost £4,000 a year, but only if they stay in education and training. Many students can now be
paid to keep learning with the Education Maintenance Allowance. Figures from the National Office for Statistics reveal that staying on to gain A- levels, GNVQ level 3s, or re-tak- ing GCSEs can increase a per son’s earning power by up to £4,000 a year or 24% more than someone who leaves education mthout good GCSEs. _ This means that over their life

A PAIR of Mayors from the Ribble Valley have teamed up in sup port of the East Lan cashire Hospice Lottery. Ribble Valley Mayor

was started in April 2003 to raise much-needed rev enue for the charity and since then has contributed £250,000 towards patient care at the hospice. The membership has
continued to grow and now stands at 4,800 names entered into the draw each week. It offers 18 prizes: a £1,000 first prize, £250 second prize and a £100 third prize, plus 15 conso lation prizes of £10 each. Payments can be made by standing order, cheque in advance, credit or debit
Flowers galore
LANGSTROTHDALE was the destination for the Clitheroe Naturalists’ fort nightly walk. From the starting point
in Buckden there was a gradual climb up the stony track to Buckden Rake. On the way up there were still plenty of flowers to be seen. Eyebright in particu lar was still in abundance. Situated at over 1,000ft.
above sea level, the hamlet of Cray was reached after crossing over the stepping stones of Cray Gill beck. To leave Cray the mem
card or cash to a collector who will call door to door on a monthly basis. Out of the £1 weekly
contribution, approxi mately 70p goes directly to patient care at the hospice, so not only do members get the opportunity of winning big cash prizes each week, they are also reassured that they are making a small, but regu lar and vital contribution to a much-needed commu nity service. Harry Grayson, head of fund-raising, said: “We are
delighted the mayors from the Ribble Valley have decided to support the lot tery, particularly in our 21st anniversary year, as this will not only raise awareness of the scheme, but also encourage other people to join. Obviously the more peo
ple who consider pledging their support to the lot tery, the more money we will raise. “The 70p contribution
from each member does not sound like a lot of money, but when you con-
sider 4,800 of those 70 pences, tha t really will make a difference. The tar get we are seeking to achieve by March 2006 is 6,000 members, so if you feel you would like to join, or introduce a friend, rela tive or colleague, please call Ann or Gillian in the lottery office on 01254 432847.” Our picture shows Mr
Grayson (centre) with the two Ribble Valley Mayors, Coun. Robinson and Coun. Knox, (s)
bers took the farm track behind the hostelry and walked through several meadows that led to Crook Gill, where it was time for lunch. After lunch it was level walking across Scar Top. After visiting the church, there was about half-a-mile of road walk ing, then back into the meadows to walk along side the River Wharfe to Buckden. Knotted Pearlwort,
Sneezewort and Devilsbit Scabious were among the 57 different species of flow ers noted along the way. Swallows were seen dart ing about, catching insects, soon to be on their long migration to South Africa. Frank Mason thanked
the walk leaders, J. G. Trotter and Gloria Booth. The next walk, on Septem ber

ONE of the best traditional rural agricultural shows in the country and a magnifi cent day out - Hodder Valley Show takes place on Satur day, September 10th. 'This year the show returns to
its Slaidburn site. It is the organ isation’s 61st event and during the past few months, committee members have been working extremely hard to ensure that it certainly lives up to and, if pos sible, surpasses its predecessors. Hodder Valley Show offers
members of the farming commu nity a chance to socialise, sit back and relax in the company of like-minded people. For those who do not live on a
farm, or even near one, then this show is certain to leave them wishing they did! The cama raderie and friendship displayed throughout a long day of non stop events is amazing and there is always something to Interest everyone.

their paces and the annual fell race is expected to attract some of the best runners in the North, with a steep and challenging course in a superb setting. Parking is free. For an excep
