morning, many people awoke to find water levels rising fast, with homes throughout the rural borough flooded. Despite extensive work
being carried out a t Sawley to ensure the flood risk is min imised, the village took much of the force of Friday morn ing’s heavy rain resulting in
floods to a depth of nearly five
feet. I t is also understood th a t a
driver had to wade to safety a f te r his Mercedes car sub merged as he tr ied to cross
Sawley bridge. Many properties were left
under a foot of water, leaving people stranded in th e first floor of their properties. Insp. Bob Ford, of Clitheroe
, police, and his team of officers were out all day on F riday monitoring the flood situation. Roads were left impassable
and major mopping up opera tions continued throughout
the weekend. As a result of the torrential rain, the normally picture-postcard village of Bolton-by-Bowland was
almost completely swamped. The p o s t office and te a
rooms and Coach and Horses public house, along with many homes were left under three
feet of water. Mrs Ailsa Baxter, of th e
Coach and Horses awoke to find her cellar in three feet of
water. Re-living the h o r rif ic
moment, she said: “I woke up at 6 a.m. because our neigh bour was banging on the door
telling us to g et our flood boards an d sandbags out because the village had been flooded. ■ “When I looked outside, I
was shocked. The road was like a river - a dirty river. “I went to the cellar and was
horrified to find three feet of water there. Mrs B a x te r had £4,000
worth of s tock in the cellar, which has been completely ruined and she was not able to open on F r id a y until she received an emergency deliv ery. She added: “I have been
numing the pub for five years and
. this is the second time it has been hit by floods.” I t was a similar s tory for Mrs
Angela Smith, owner of the post office and tea rooms, who also woke to find the downstairs of her busi ness in three feet of water. Speaking to the Clitheroe Adver
tiser and Times two days after the disaster, she said: “The extent of the damage is so bad th a t we are still clearing up the mess. “All the carpets have been ruined
and i t smells. We cannot do any thing - it is so frustrating. “We bought this place three years
ago and refurbished it completely. Until we have the place re-decorat ed an d th e kitchen thoroughly cleaned and inspected, we cannot function as a tea room.”
Mrs Srnith explained th a t the
post office however will remain open as usual. The village of Waddington was
also hit by floods. The brook th a t runs alongside the main road through the village overflowed caus ing almost three feet of water along the streets. People living there could only watch in horror at the damage it caused. Fire-fighter Ronnie Eatough, of
Clitheroe's retained fire station, said: “We have been working since 6 a.m. Our firs t job was to pump water out of the post office building and the nearby pub in Bolton-by- Bowland, which took us nearly two hours. “Just after 9 a.m. when we were
about to return to the station, we were re-directed to Waddington.
“Clitheroe Road, which is the
main road through the village, was impassable. We had to close the road a t first, but later installed a ramp for motorists to get in and out of the village. Firefighters were at the scene for
three hours. The rain and subsequent flooding
caused the cancellation of the pop ular Ribble Valley Vintage Rally. As forecasters warned there was
more rain to come over the week end, hundreds of residents in high- risk areas signed up to the automat ed voice messaging system (AVM), which enabled them to receive infor mation about the flood situation. Council bosses were also prepared
to keep th e sandbag depot open over the weekend in case the weath er deteriorated.
