Civic couple’s praise for hospice

THE work of the East Lancashire Hos pice was praised by Kibble Valley’s Mayor and Mayoress during a recent visit. Coun. Charles Warkman and his wife,

Ruth, travelled to the Blackburn-based hospice, to see first hand the services offered to cancer sufferers and their fami lies from Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndbum and the Kibble Valley. They were greeted by hospice chairman

Geoffrey Braithwaite prior to a tour of the new purpose-built building. I t was their first visit to the hospice,

although both the Mayor and Mayoress are well aware of the splendid work car ried out. Mr Harry Grayson, head of fund-rais

Training to be a better driver

IN an a ttempt to make Lancashire roads a safer place for everyone, Black burn Area Road Safety Association is running a Better Driving Course s ta r tin g on September 5th. The course should prove

beneficial to newly-quali fied and more experienced drivers alike, who will receive tuition in defensive driving techniques. The course will teach

many aspects of driving including braking, corner ing, motorway'driving as well as preventing and cor recting skids. The cost of the course is

£20 for adults and £15 for students, which entitles the applicant to 12 months membership of BARSA. Lectures are held on

Tuesday evenings with practical driving sessions on Sunday mornings meet ing on the ALDI Super market car park in Black burn (opposite Blackburn Rovers Football Club) at

ing, said: “We were delighted that the Mayor and Mayoress took time out from their extremely busy schedule to come to visit us, as it is important not only just to raise the awareness of our work, but also for them to see exactly how public money kindly donated to the charity benefits local people”. The East Lancashire Hospice is situat

ed on Park Lee Road and cares for termi nally ill patients and their families. I t depends very heavily on the generosity and support of people from the region, with £400,000 needed to be raised from voluntary sources each and every year. Pictured are the Mayor and Mayoress,

Families relax on day out at theme park

THERE was a great day out in store when Ribble Valley Home-Start fami lies and their volunteers enjoyed a fun-packed day out a t Camelot Theme Park. In spite of the awful

weather in the lead up to the day, the sun shone and the families were able to spend the day soaking up the sun and enjoying the many rides on offer. In all, 52 people attend

ed the trip and everyone thoroughly enjoyed them selves. So much so, that no one wanted to leave, not least the senior organiser, who returned to the coach soaking wet after a ride on the log flume! On the way home, the

WINNERS at Clitheroe Bridge Club on Monday were: NS Mrs J. Gilmour and Mrs J. Bailey, Mr and Mrs R. Atkinson. Mrs I. Park and Mr B. Cuba, Mr C. Pollard and Mrs P. Mur ray. On Thursday winners were: NS Mrs J. Martin-

children all drew pictures of their favourite part of the day, which showed just how much they had enjoyed themselves. Home-Start Ribble Val

ley is always looking to recruit new volunteers to offer support to families with young children. I t is extremely rewarding and the organisation only requests those volunteeer- ing to spare a few hours each week. Anyone interested in

becoming a Home-Start volunteer should tele phone 01254 825955 to obtain further details. The next preparation

course is due to start in October.

WMJ Thieves steal £200 cycle

A BLACK and silver pedal cycle, valued at £200, was stolen from out side a house in Brook Street, Clitheroe. Offenders stole the

O'

ited was also ordered to pay £1,610.34 in costs to the Environment Agency, which brought the successful prosecu tion. Finola Eyers (prosecuting) told the

court how on September 23rd last year a member of the public contact ed the Environment Agency about a sewage pollution incident on a stream feeding into the River Calder in Whalley. An agency officer went to the site and saw that a manhole on the bank of the stream was overflow ing into the stream.

The manhole cover seemed to have

been forced off by the pressure of the discharge. The officer found sewage litter and sanitary towels. The smell of sewage was strong, even 100 metres away from the manhole. The discharge had caused sewage

fungus to develop in the stream for about 100 metres downstream of the manhole. At this point, the stream meets the River Calder, where the sewage was diluted by the increased volume of water. The agency discovered from Ribble

Valley Borough Council that the sewer from which the discharge was escaping served Calderstones Hospi tal and the George Wimpey North West housing development Imown as Calderstones Park. The responsibility for maintaining

the sewer was George Wimpey North

West's. The agency notified George Wim-

pey's site engineer of the problem and the company called in contractors to deal with it. They eventually cleared the block

age and returned the following day to clear up the sewage litter and fungus on the banks of the stream. Agency ecologists found that the

water quality in the stream was much worse downstream of the discharge, which could only be explained by the presence of sewage from the overflow ing manhole. Fortunately, the grass on the river

bank had acted as a filter and reduced the long-term impact on the stream, as had the dilution of the sewage dis charge as it entered the Calder.
