Tributes paid as popular PC dies

LOVED ones, friends and work colleagues this week paid tribute to Whalley policewom
an Miss Cate Sutcliffe. Miss Sutcliffe (34), of
Waddington, collapsed while bn duty on Sunday, August 8th. She had been attending a routine, non- confrontational incident in Waddington and was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary by ambulance, later being transferred to Royal Preston Hospital. After undergoing
surgery to treat cerebral bleeding, Miss Sutcliffe made good progress for a few days, but sadly her condition later deteriorat ed. She lapsed into a coma and died on Friday evening. Miss Sutcliffe’s parents,
Clitheroe Town Council and Ribble Valley Bor ough Councillors Mr and Mrs Stephen and Mar garet Sutcliffe, spoke of their deep sorrow this week through a family statement.

Lancashire Constabulary in December 1991 and was posted to Blackburn sec tion on completion of her initial probationer train ing. In 1995, she worked for a short time in Black- bum custody office before transferring to the Eastern Divisional Support Unit based at Great Harwood. Miss Sutcliffe then
worked as part of the spe cialist unit for three years before moving to the Rib ble Valley in 1998. She worked from Whalley
police station as a geo graphic patrol officer and it was during a routine shift that she was taken ill. Chief Constable Paul
Stephenson, speaking on behalf of Lancashire Con stabulary, said: “Cate was a valuable and well-liked member of the constabu lary and Ribble Valley policing team and was renowned locally for her sense of humour and enthusiasm. She-was a dedicated police officer and was committed to her profession. Our thoughts at this time are with her family and we will contin ue to support them
through this extremely dif ficult time.” Chief Superintendent
David Mallaby, Divisional Commander of Eastern Division, said; “Cate spent 13 years serving the communities of East Lan cashire and it is not sur prising that she was well known and well liked both within the organisation and outside. “We are devastated at

World cycle stars’ Ribble Valley date
HOT on the heels of the Olympic Games, some of the top names in world cycling will be in the Ribble Valley on Wednes day. Enthusiasts of pedal power will be able to watch as the first leg of the Tour of
