Store giants are not buying auction mart

by Julie Wintle

RUMOURS that super market giant Morrisons are interested in buying the Clitheroe Auction Mart site have been totally quashed this week. I t had been rumoured

that the managers of Clitheroe Auction Mart planned to merge the busi ness with Gisbum Auction Mart in order to sell off its Lincoln Way site to Mor risons. However, all three par

ties have denied that there is any truth in the matter when the Clitheroe Adver tiser and Times contacted them this week. A spokesman for Morrisons

said: “We have no plans whatsoever to open a store in Clitheroe.” Chairman of Clitheroe

Auction Mart Mr Robert Parker said yesterday: "We are extending the Silver- woods' building to extend the furniture and antiques side of the business and, like always, we have plans to improve the lifestock side which is our core busi ness. "We are, with the

Wednesday and Sunday markets, p roba bly the most successful auction mart in Lancashire. “ If you think we have on

Wednesday nights over the year a quarter of a million people on the site, the whole rumour is preposter ous."

Meanwhile, Mr Richard

Turner, of Richard Turner and Sons, who act as auc tioneers and secretaries for Gisburn Auction M a r t , said: “ Following the recent extension, Gisburn A u c tion Mart clearly commit ted itself to livestock mar keting. It has no current plans to diversify or merge with any other c om p a nies.” Morrisons currently has

supermarkets in Skipton, Blackburn and Longridge, the latter formally a Safe- ways store. All three stores are pop

ular with people from the Ribble Valley, particularly the Skipton store, which was built several years ago on the former Skipton Auc tion Mart site.
