Time stands still with a facelift!

REJUVENATION treatment is today's cosmetic rage. Now a new process in which the

client literally "grows" their own facelift is taking off in this country. Featured on the popular Richard

and Judy TV programme, the Isola- gen process, with a price tag of around £3,000, was pioneered in the USA. The process works by reintroduc

ing your own most vibrant, actively growing cells into your skin, harness ing your body's natural restorative powers and it can be carried out in a beauty clinic. An Isolagen trained doctor takes a

small sample of collagen-producing cells from behind the ear which are sent to Isolagen's laboratories where they are multiplied for six to eight weeks. The cells are then injected back

into your skin in a series of treat ments, causing the collagen to grow and spread -

in essence "growing" a

facelift. Cells can be stored, so that some one at the age of 30 could decide to

use them when they reach their 50s or 60s. The process has been used in America since 1987. It can be used to improve the appearance of scars and abnormalities, but is mostly used for cosmetic purposes.

New ‘friends’ from school are not at all welcome - show them the door

WITH children shortly going back to school, parents are being urged to pro tect against unwanted “ friends” . Headlice are tiny insects that live on

hair and feed from the human scalp by sucking blood. This is pain free because the louse uses anaesthetic before it bites, but it causes the characteristic itching. Parents are being warned to be aware

that headlice are a common problem in schools where they are easily passed from one person to another during close physical contact. Headlice are tiny greyish-brown

insects, about 2.5mm long, that lay eggs on the strands of the hair, which then hatch after seven to eight days leaving a shiny white eggshell or “nit” attached to the hair. A common misconception is that

headlice only live on dirty hair, hut they will actually live on all hair types regardless of the condition. How to detect headlice: • Wash the hair using ordinary sham poo and condition well;

remote parts of the world is becoming more and more popular.

But, as with most good things, there’s a

downside. Malaria, dysentery and t)tphoid to name

but a few, can all travel with you on the flight home and you won’ t even realise you’ve got them until you’re back. The past three years have seen a 21 %

rise in the number of travellers contracting tropical diseases abroad, according to Pru dential Insurance. And GPs are suddenly having to wise up on a range of illnesses they wouldn’t normally expect to come across in the UK.

Dr Richard Dawood, a specialist in trav

el medicine at the Fleet Street Travel Clin ic, says: “ There’s a vast range of tropical diseases someone can bring back with them but by far the most common problem is a persistent intestinal upset - diarrhoea that fails to get better on its own or with initial treatment.

“There are many possible causes of this,

including giardia - a single-celled parasite present in most places where hygiene is poor - and amoebic dysentery. “By far the most serious tropical disease,

is malaria, which causes about 2,000 cases in travellers returning to the UK every year, of whom between 10 and 20 will die.”

work through the hair from root to tip, which will take approximately 15 min utes; and • If moving lice are found, it is impor

tant to check all family members and close contacts. Medication, which can be bought at

chemists or is available on prescription, should only be used if living, moving lice are found and should be repeated seven days later to ensure that all lice are killed. Although there is no way the prevent

infections, there are ways to reduce the risks. Regular hair brushing can dam age headlice and render them imable to lay eggs and long hair should be tied back at school. Weekly checks with a lice detection comb are also advisable. • Anyone wanting advice about

headlice should speak to their GP, health visitor or school nurse or, alternatively, a pharmacist or NHS Direct.
