Whist drive
At the monthly whist drive held in Bolton- by-Bowland Village Hall, whist winners were: Ladies - N. Fox, E. Barker F. Jeffs. Gents - M. Davies, J. Procter, R. Barker.

The next drive will be the war memorial Christmas event on December 16th.
Young farmers
Members of Bolton- by-Bowland Young Farmers’ Club enjoyed an evening of glass painting and stock judging.
Next week’s meeting will be a talk on fer rets, members to meet in the village at 7-30 p.m.
CHATBURN I
Silent auction A silent auction held in Chatburn Methodist Church raised £361 for the building fund.
Advent service
At the first Advent Sunday service, held in Chatburn Methodist Church the minister the Rev. Stephen Foster led the worship and the vicar the Rev. Rod ney Nicholson preached the sermon. Miss Val Parker read the lessons and lit the Advent candle and the organist was Mrs Marilyn Yates.
A good congregation enjoyed light refresh ments at the close of the service.

The meeting of Chat burn Women’s Fel lowship was opened by Mrs Doris Giles who introduced guest speaker Mrs Sheila Sagar, who spoke about her daughter Pheona’s wedding in India. She said Pheona met her future husband George in England while he was study ing here. She described the bride’s green sari and she as the bride’s mother wore a dark pink long dress with wide
brimmed hat. The music was mainly Indian, but the English guests were asked to sing “All Things Bright and Beautiful”. Mrs Sagar passed round the wedding pho tographs tor every one to admire.
The next meeting vvill be on Wednesday at 2-30 p.m. when the speaker will be Mrs Brenda Rodgers, of Whalley. Everyone is welcome.
Car wash

Christmas fair
The annual Christmas fair will take place in Chipping Village Hall on Sunday from 2 p.m. There will be a variety of stalls and refrehments.

Christingle Children of all ages enjoyed the family Christingle service conducted by the Rev. Alan Reid in St Leonard’s Church, Downham, on Sun day morning.
Everyone received a Christingle which had been assembled by a willing band of helpers on Saturday afternoon.
The service had been written by the Chil dren’s Society which receives all the money collected at the service, and also the money in the cardboard candles distributed through out the village earli-

GRINDLETON Nativity
A family nativity ser vice involving young and old together will be held in Grindleton Methodist Church on Sunday.
The service during which the Christmas story will be told, will be led by Mrs Karen Sleet who leads Jam-Tots, the church’s carer and toddler group, who will be taking part.
Another focus for the service will be the receiving of boxes for the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal. These are shoeboxes.

HURST GREEN
Bowling Club
Hurst Green won two prizes: £30 for the 'B' team, who came sec ond in the Stephen Myerscough Cup, and £30 for the 'A' team, who are cele brating their promo tion from the 4th to the 3rd Division. The money was given to club funds.
Fifteen members of Hurst Green Bowling Club enjoyed a pre sentation evening hosted by the Lon- gridge and District Mixed Bowling League on Friday evening. Held in the Lonsdale Club, in Preston, the event was attended by prizewinners from clubs within the six divisions of the league.
Starry success Hurst Green woman Sue Costello held one of her popular “star evenings” on Chil dren in Need night, raising £548 to be split between Chil dren in Need and Alder Hey Hospital.
Friends’ funds
Evening with the Stars", the event in Ribchester Sports and Social Club fea tured a variety of arts from all over the Ribble Valley, includ ing singers, guitarists and a saxophonist. The money was raised through ticket sales, a raffle and the sale of hot dogs and mince pies.

A prickly subject
Sixty-five adults and children, including Brownies on the trail of their Environment Badge, attended a talk on hedgehogs at St John's Church Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The speaker had driv en over, from the Rochdale Hedgehog Rescue Society, bringing two of her clients with her to illustrate some of the finer points of the hedgehog's life. Before the talk, those present were able to enjoy a tea laid on by the Bailey family

The parishioners are now busy preparing for their Christmas Fair, being held in the Memorial Hall next Saturday, December 11th.

They explained the protocol and how Miss Bailey was introduced to HM The Queen on a pre vious visit to Stony- hurst College. A video of the occasion was shown and Mrs Young thanked them both and presented them with Christmas plants. Winners of the compe tition were Mrs E. Jacques and Mrs A. Harrison. Raffle win ner was Mrs Young. The yearly competi tion winners were Mrs M. Eccles, Miss Aljearne, Mrs T. Grotty and Mrs R. Marsland.
