Stonyhurst pupils on Spanish pilgrimage

A GROUP of Stonyhurst College pupils, staff and friends has completed a pilgrim age to Spain including a visit to the home of St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit movement. The pilgrimage to Santiago de Com

postela, which followed the ancient pilgrims’ route, began in Loyola where Fr Matthew Power SJ, until recently Chaplain of Stony hurst, met the 39-strong group. Few school parties venture on the long

pilgrimage that took the Stonyhurst group seven days through some beautiful Spanish scenery and the whole range of weather - from bright sunshine to driving sleetl The college party was welcomed through

out by local people living along the route from Loyola in Northern Spain where St Ignatius was born in 1491, across country to Santiago de Compostela on the Spanish North West coast. “The Stonyhurst reputation seemed to go

before us as people recognised our English sense of ‘fair play’ and good humour,” said

Lower tax on second homes

slashed SECOND homes in Kib ble Valley will no longer qualify for half-price council tax after council lors voted to scrap the dis count. Members of Ribble Val

ley Borough Council’s Policy and Finance Com mittee have decided to reduce the 50% discount to just 10%. ’There are currently 213

second homes in Ribble Valley. The extra revenue gen

erated will be spent local ly-

The council’s revenues

and benefits manager, Mr Mark Edmondson, said: “Our Policy and Finance Committee has decided to reduce the council tax dis count on unoccupied fur nished properties. “More than 200 proper

ties will be affected and the extra money will go to the Local Strategic Part nership.” The changes will come

into force on April 1st, 2005. Fimther information is

available front! Mark Edmondson on 01200 414505.

Michael Turner, the head of history who organised the pilgrimage. “In particular, the Stonyhurst singing

was greatly appreciated with a sung Mass in Portomarin making full use of the acous tics, moving some to tears at the joyful exu berance of our young people,” he said. “Then, on arrival in Santiago, the Stony

hurst banner was paraded in town Mth the group of Stonyhurst pilgrims singing hosan nas and Pater Noster. “Father Matthew concelebrated the Pil

grims’ Mass on Sunday, which was held in Santiago Cathedral and which saw the church overflowing out on to the steps and into the square.” Mr Turner added: “There were many

intangible aspects to this remarkable jour ney, best summed up by our pupils who spoke of the warmth, fellowship, spirit, com munity, love, kindness and hospitality they enjoyed throughout.” Pictured are pupils in front of St Ignatius’ Basilica in Loyola, (s)

Deal to improve water supplies

A MULTI-MILLION pound deal to help improve the envi ronment and water quality across the North West has been signed by United Utili ties. The £200 million loan

agreement with the European Investment Bank will help pay for the company’s invest ment programme to 2010. The water regulator, Ofwat,

has yet to finalise United Util ities’ investment plans. John Roberts, United

Untilities chief executive, said: “Not only is this a good deal for our customers, it’s a good deal for us. “Given the enormous size of

our investment programmes - three million pounds a day

A WIN was notched up by Clitheroe Chess Club A Team in their match against Crusaders B. Wins from Erie Mansfield and John Smith, together with draws from Michael Howseman and Martin Titterington, gained victory for Clitheroe by three to two. The victory moves

last year - every penny counts. - “This deal and others, plus

our rights issue, all help us assemble the financial pack age needed to deliver our promises to customers, the regulator and all our other stakeholders.” United Utilities has a long

standing relationship Mth the EIB, the European Union’s financing institution, which stretches back to the 1970s. The bank is the company’s

largest stakeholder and this new loan package will take its fuding of improvments to the North West’s water, wastewa ter and electricity infrastruc ture to more than £800 mil lion.

Chess club moves up into third position

Clitheroe into third place in the second division of the East Lancashire Chess League. Clitheroe Chess Club

meets every Tuesday evening from 645 p.m. at the Catholic Social Centre in Lowergate. For further details contact Brendan Brown on 01200 441949.
