Teen tried to bank cheque

A CLITHEROE teenager tried to bank a £10,000 cheque which had

originally been intended for the tax man. Blackburn magistrates heard the

cheque was originally paid in through a machine, but a bank assistant spotted that the payee had been altered. But David Alan Garner (19)

denied being responsible for the alteration and claimed the cheque had been sent to him already altered in his favour. Garner, of Littlemoor Road,

pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain £10,741 by deception. He was ordered to do 60 hours commu nity punishment and pay £70 in costs. Mr Scott Ainge (prosecuting)

said the cheque had been issued by a firm called Metal Croft Plastic Coatings and sent to the Inland Revenue on May 21st. The cheque was altered so that

Garner was the person entitled to cash it, but Mr Ainge said it was a poor effort and suspicions were quickly aroused. “No money was ever paid into

the defendant’s account,” he added. Mr Alfred Rebello (defending)

said Garner still maintained the cheque came to his house already changed. He said Garner had no drink or drug problems and was a hard working young man.

to IL By mid week you’ll be counting your cash and probably wishing you’d saved a little more to spend on festive fun; not to worry, though, with a pinch of creativity you’ll soon put together economical gifts that look like they cost much more than they actually did. A friend has a surprising suggestion about what to do at the weekend.

A FORMER Stonyhurst College teacher, who works with the British Jesuits and shares their ideals, has been honoured at the inaugural awarding of the Campion Medal. Mr Peter Hardwick (75), of

Waddington Road, Clitheroe, attended the Directors of Work Conference, in Oxford, to receive the prestigious award, which was only awarded to nine people in the country. In making the presentations,

Jesuit Provincial Fr David . Smolira, described the Campi on Medal as “a way of recog- nimng publicly those who work with the society in particularly praiseworthy ways” and said

that they “represent the vari ety and breadth of those who share our ideals and mission.” Struck to commemorate the

bi-centenary of the Restora tion of the British (then English) Province, the medal features on one side a likeness of St Edmund Campion, who was martyred in 1581, with the designation Society of British Province. On the other side, it features

the IHS monogram and the motto For the Glory of God and the Conunon Good. Since attending the ceremo

ny, Mr Hardwick, pictured, who attends St Michael and St John’s Church and is also chairman of the parish forum, has been re-living the moment he discovered he was one of the nine lucky recipients.

AN assistant at a Clitheroe travel agents used a client’s credit card to buy £300 worth of Euros and ferry tickets to France and then took her boyfriend on holiday. Blackburn magistrates heard that

when police investigated the decep tion they found that Rachael Eliza beth Schofield had committed other offences using credit cards and

cheques which had been made out to her. Schofield (34), of Old Back Lane,

'Wiswell, pleaded guilty to two charges of obtaining property by deception and asked for seven similar offences to , be taken into consideration. She was made subject to a commu

nity rehabilitation order for 12 months and ordered to pay £2,758 in compensation. Mr Neil 'White (prosecuting) said Schofield was employed at Althams in

Clitheroe at the time of the offences in June. A family friend, Mr Michael Ball,

had contacted her because he was arranging a stag party to Amsterdam for himself and 10 friends. He asked her to arrange flights and

two nights’ accommodation and had given details of his credit card and one belonging to Mr Christopher Ham, with the instruction to split the cost between the two. Mr Ham later received a bank state

ment showing payments of £300 and £148. “The police were notified and their

inquiries showed Schofield had bought 450 Euros and two ferry tickets for her and her bpyfriend to have a holiday in France,” said Mr White. He said she later admitted seven

other offences, all involving client money. “The people whose details the defen

dant used are all people who knew her, family friends or people from previous

employment,” added Mr 'White. Mr Daniel King (defending) said his

client was a woman of previous good character who was deeply ashamed of what she had dona “A tremendous pun ishment for her is that she now has a convdetion for a serious criminal offence, not to mention the shame she has brought on herself and her family,” said Mr King. He added that Schofield and her partner had discussed the situation and would discharge the full amount of compensation within two months.
