01282 834782 phone-in Mr Peter Foley was diag

nosed with the thyroid disorder which led to surgery on both eyes and several years of inten sive treatment. In recognition of the support

he received, Mr Foley, who runs Holden Clough Nursery just outside Bolton-by-Bowland, has organised a charity fund raising evening, which includes appearances from some of gar dening’s top names. He regularly appears on B B C

Radio Lancashire's popular Sunday lunchtime Gardeners' Question Time and the radio station has thrown its support behind the project.

Gay Search, long-time pre

senter of the BBC’s “Garden ers’ World” and author of “Gar dener’s World Through the Years”, will present the evening on Saturday, June 5th, at St Augustine’s RC High School in Billington. “As you can imagine this

caused massive disruption to both the family and the busi ness, but the support we received from friends and vari ous organisations was nothing short of fantastic,” he said. He added: “I t is only since

being afflicted with this that I have realised what an impor tant function the thyroid per

forms within our bodies and how it affects everyday life, especially when it does not work

properly. “So the overall idea for the

evening is not just to help raise funds for the charities, but also heighten awareness of the importance of the thyroid in the human body and everyday

life.” The charities and organisa

tions that will benefit from the event include the Thyroid Eye Disease Charitable Trust, the British Thyroid Foundation (BTF), of which Gay Search is a patron, Tynesight, the New castle group of hospitals where

Peter had his operation and where ongoing research is tak ing place, the Christie Hospital Endocrine Unit, where he is having ongoing treatment and is another centre of research, the Al. Masoon Society Pak istan, where eye treatments are carried out on thousands of patients using the most basic of facilities and “Perennial” - the

Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society. Apart from presentations by

Mr Foley and Gay Search, there will also be an auction of “celebrity containers” designed by other television gardening celebrities and colleagues on Radio Lancashire and planted up by Myerscough College. The auctioneer will be Paul

Dennis, of Richard Turner and Son in Kendal, who at one time was auctioneer at Gisburn Auc tion Mart. A prize draw will also be held

on the evening in aid of Peren nial, which has supported Mr Foley and provides on-going support to many horticultural families suffering hardship. There will be a plant sale with

items donated by Mr Foley’s colleagues in the trade. BBC Radio Lancashire with Ben Thomson will be on site with their Internet bus, and Graham Liver and June Leeming from the radio station’s afternoon programme will compere the evening’s events. Tickets for the event are £20

each including wine and canapes upon arrival, and tea and coffee during the interval. Anyone interested may con

ta ct Mr Foley at Holden Clough Nursery.
