Clitheroe......................23 Broughton .................7 A CONTROLLED and disciplined performance by the town rugby team was the key to this hard- fought victory at Little- moor last Saturday. The Manchester side
always travel with a repu tation, and this was well
V/r deserved when a Clitheroe player was felled within minutes of the kick-off. Anxious not to plummet
to their levels of foul play, Clitheroe knew they had to be at their most arctic- like coolness and let the referee take care of off-the- ball incidents. The only surprise was
that it took until the sec ond half before the red card was produced and marching orders were given. In between times there was, even to the most
) casual of observers, too many a f is t flying, and. although Clitheroe are not whiter than white in a hard physical contact game, these incidents left a bitter taste and somewhat took the sheen off a good result. During the periods
i V
when some actual rugby football was being played, the locals held the edge in most phases - just edging the scrummages and almost completely domi nating the line outs. Also with the power and
size of two Lomu-sized wingman in the shape of Alex Hough and Edward Hacking, they found the flanks too hot to handle. Both wingers are still novices, for different rea-
Maroon and Golds
sons, and still have plenty to learn. Hough is a newcomer to
the game, but has the pace, coupled with the build, to add to his try tally even further this term. Hacking, a converted
back row player, can unlock many a defence at this level with raw block busting power when he puts his mind to it. Quietly guiding these
two wings is full-back Jim Moody, who always does the basics right and has been almost ever present this season. For the record, it was
three tries to Clitheroe, of which Hacking scored a brace. The first was put away
after number eight Ollie McEntyre picked up from the base of a scrum, while the second was a 30-yard blast through several would-be tacklers. Then it was Hough’s
turn. A line out on the right, followed by some quick hands, allowed enough space to open up for him to scoot down the wing. Fly half Nathan Peel
then chipped in on the score with two penalties and a conversion to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Broughton never looked
like breaching Clitheroe’s defence, but somehow managed to contrive to allow the referee to award them a penalty try. Clitheroe now take their
three-match unbeaten run to local rivals Colne and Nelson this Saturday.

Club. After a very busy and

successful year, the club held its annual meeting on Sunday, and the forthcom ing season promises much. The club are presently
looking for a home to call their own, as a lack of training facilities has con tinued to cause problems. The club would ideally
like to see new facilities built in the area, as the club relies on the use of Ribblesdale Technology College and Clitheroe Royal Grammar Schools’ facilities. It has also been a busy
year in terms of new ven tures for the club, with social dinner dances and a successful three-day net- ball summer school that was over-subscribed. Over the past financial
year, the club saw a small profit, and although mak ing a profit is not a key issue, the club runs to a tight budget. If it wasn’t for grants
and donations of £1,058, and fund raising of £3,500, the club would have to raise their fees. The club’s biggest
fundraiser this year was the dinner dance at the golf club, which raised £2,251, but the cost of

Big plans for the future at the Valley’s thriving netball club
coaching, kit, equipment and rent dug into the bud get. There could be a small
increase in match fees in September if tournaments continue to fail to cover costs, but a 10% reduction in fees is available if they
are .paid on time each term. The club is now becom
ing known at national and local levels as a force to be reckoned with as well as a service to the local com munity - something the club is very proud of and
aims to build upon in the new season. The Under 14 and
Under 16 squads both reached the National Finals and members from each of those two age groups have represented the county, attended Eng-
land training sessions and 0 been in contention for the Under 17 England squad. ^ Meanwhile other squads
have enjoyed both league and tournament success '2$ that sees the club now holders of three trophies.

And the extra height of the Pre
ston combined Under 11s and Under 12s team was a distinct advantage as the sleepy Bucca neers wallowed in the hallowed mud of Clitheroe. In truth, the final score proper
ly reflected the experience of a dis ciplined St Pius side. All were equals, however, in the
clubhouse later with chips and sandwiches provided by the hosts, ever generous in defeat. This Sunday the normal train
ing session is to be preceded by an adult “just for fun” tag tourna ment at 10 a.m., with a visit from an England-capped Sale Sharks player scheduled for later in the morning.
Clitheroe Buccaneers run train
ing sessions every Sunday during term time starting at 11-15 a.m. at Littlemoor. For more information, contact
