FANS of the original 1970s classic Hanna- Barbera “Scooby Doo” series were delight ed and appalled in equal measure when a part-live action and part-computer anima tion version hit the big screen in 2001. Some marvelled at the cartoon charac
ters’ transformation and the pretty impres sive CGI (computer generated images), but the purists claimed it was one case too many for “Mystery Inc”. Today’s kids, unburdened by fears that

their precious childhood memories might be tarnished, enjoyed the film for what it was and thought it was great. The sequel is even better, with a stronger
plot and better interaction between the characters. In their new adventure, Scooby and the
gang - Fred, Daphne, Velma aand Shaggy - confront some of the most memorable villains from the original cartoon series. They are invited to visit a museum dedi

cated to their exploits, but things go wrong when some of the exhibits come to life and begin to wreak havoc on the City of Coolsville. The ringleader is a mysterious masked figure, who swears vengeance on Mystery Inc. The plot is fun, the action lively and the
characters enjoyable to watch, especially Scooby Doo himself. The film captures the feeling of the orig

Day-long feast of Middle Earth
FANS of the multi-Oscar winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy are in for a day-long feast of Middle-Earth entertainment. The Dukes Cinema, in Moor Lane, Lan
caster, is showing all three epic films back- to-back on Saturday, May 1st. Billed as a “Lordathon”, the endurance
event gets under way at 11 a.m. A Lord of the Rings-themed fancy dress
competition is optional, while refreshments, including a bar, will be available on site. If you are a fan, this is a great opportuni
ty to see the full story unfold on the big screen with state-of-the-art Dolby digital EX surround sound. If it all sounds too much, you can see any of the three films individually, but there is a discount for peo ple booking to watch all three together. To book your seat, call The Dukes on
01254 598500.
CHARLES DICKENS’ “Great Expectations” was in the top 25 of the recent “Big Read” sur vey, so it is fitting that the Royal Exchange should revive its founder, James Maxwell’s, adap tation. However, the problem
with Dickens is that his novels have long and intricate plots and a wealth of characters. This production, by Jacob Murray, does stick closely to the story of Pip’s life, from his fearful meeting with the convict Magwitch (Jonathan Hackett), his youth at the forge of Joe Gargery (John Elmes) and his journey to adult hood with the help and hindrance of the lovely Estella (Charlotte Emmerson). Other principal char acters include the eccen
tric Miss Havisham (Una Stubbs), the irre pressible Herbert Pocket (Jamie De Courcy) and many others, notably the enigmatic lawyer Jaggers (Malcolm Ren nie) and his clerk Wem- mick (Jonathan Kee- ble). ’There are some enter
taining incidents and the fight between the young Herbert and Pip is a welcome comic relief, as is the wonderful stork-legged walk of Wemmick. But the underlying tone is grim. Oliver Dimsdale
makes an appealing Pip and convinces us of the changes from child to man and, at last, to a man who realises what is really important. If you like Dickens,
then you will enjoy this well-cast play.
