Fond memories of a popular member of farming family

by Margaret Parsons

ONE of the Kibble Val ley’s oldest residents, Mrs Mamie Holgate, has died a t the grand old age of 100. Mrs Holgate, who

had lived at Littlemoor House in Sabden,' for many years was a much-loved character who celebrated her cen tury milestone last May in real style with three parties, a tele gram from the Queen and a visit from the Mayor and Mayoress of the Valley, Coun. and Mrs Alan and Susan Yearing. No doubt she would

have been planning this year’s celebration, but sadly died on March 16th. She left her many

friends and large family of two daughters, Mrs Jeanne Cullen, of Clitheroe, and Mrs Ruth Hunter, of Sab den, four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchil dren. A farmer’s \vife for 30

years, she was born in Harwood, Bolton, and in 1930 married the late Walter Holgate, joining his farming family at Dockher Farm, Sawley. She later farmed in

Guide hear Blackburn. She was very active

in the farming commu nity and served as

Warning over bogus lottery

by Faiza Afzaal

A WARNING has been issued by Lancashire County Council’s Trading Standards to people across the Ribble Valley to steer clear of joining any bogus lot

tery syndicates. The warning comes after a local

branch president of the ladies’ section of the NFU. She had many interests

and joined in activities at Littlemoor House shel tered housing in Sabden where she lived and was particularly keen on needlework and crafts such as tatting. She is fondly remem

bered in the village, not least for being invited to stvitch on the Christmas lights a few years ago and hitting the headlines when she was 99 and received a special certifi cate from the Fisherman’s Friends company in Fleetwood because she so enjoyed their lozenges. The funeral service

took place at St Nicholas’s Church, Sab den, conducted by Fr Trevor Vaughan and was followed by cremation at Accrington.

resident contacted the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times regarding the authenticity of a letter allegedly sent by the European Lottery Guild. The letter informed him that he

was the lucky mnner of a substan tial lottery prize (although he had not participated in a lottery draw). The prize money however could not be collected unless he paid a fee of £5.

The letter emphasised that the

deadline for paying the fee was imminent and that his right to col lect the cash prize was about to expire.

A spokesman for the county’s

Trading Standards, said: “We strongly advise people to ignore these types of mailshots or e-mails as the odds are always stacked against them. “If people are telephoned by rep

resentatives of these organisations they should not be fooled by promis es of a certain win. “Under no circumstances should

the recipient pay or divulge their bank details. “The fraudsters are hard to pin

down as they move around the world with false identities and use names evoking official lotteries and forge printed sheets and signatures of banks and other institutions.” For further information or advice

on the above issue please telephone 0845 6001352. Alternatively, suspicious letters

can be forwarded to Lancashire County Council Trading Standards, 58-60 Guildhall Street, Preston,

WHEN it comes to mathe matical conundrums, you can’t beat the brainpower at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School. I ts team of number

crunchers emerged victorious when teams from more than 20 schools across Lancashire competed a t Queen Eliza b eth ’s Grammar School, Blackburn, in the regional final of a nationwide maths

. challenge. I t was one of 34 finals

sponsored by the D epa rt ment for Education and Skills and taking place across the UK during the next three months. Angela Gould, executive

director of competition organisers the United King dom Mathematics Trus t (UKMT), said: “This Team Maths Challenge brings together pupils and teachers to compete face-to-face with their peers from other schools of all types. “Our eoal is to raise the

profile of mathematics in schools and to increase enthusiasm and interest in the subject.” Students from Year 8 and 9

competed to represent their school in the competition. The Clitheroe team com

prised Elizabeth Highton, Richard Yates, Andrew McRae and Michael Carr. During the competition

they faced a variety of math ematical challenges, based on teamwork, speed, reasoning and fun! There were four rounds - a

group contest, a maths relay race, a cross-number and a head-to-head competition. In all contests the groups

were working against time, producing a lively and excit ing atmosphere, with pupils shouting encouragement and racing back and forth to beat the time countdown. Oakhill College also took

p a r t in the competition, which QEGS hopes to host aeain in 2005.
