STUDENTS from a local school were given top marks for achieving the best-ever GCSE results at an awards ceremony. More than 500 pupils and guests

gathered for a celebration evening to mark the 40 th anniversary of St

Augustine’s RC High School, Billington. Headteacher Mr Anthony McNa

mara commended the school for becoming one of the first Specialist Science Colleges in Lancashire, and one of 100 schools nationally to be given Leading Edge Status. “The efforts and achievements

have been extraordinary by any reck-. oning.

“Seventy-six per cent of the year

group achieved at least five or more top grades. Many of our students . with learning difficulties also earned exceptional results and we anticipate our Value Added scores from these pupils may well break all records,” commented Mr McNamara. Throughout the evening, many

students were congratulated for their academic success, especially last year’s head girl, Francesca Holt, who achieved 10 s tarred A grades a t GCSE, with two of her scripts being identified as among the best five in ' the country. Distribution of certificates and

prizes was by guest speaker Mrs Anno Conlon, assistant headteacher of Fisher-More High School,Colne. She had worked with the school’s

head of music on internationally- acclaimed works including, Yanomamo, African Jigsaw and Ocean World. During the evening, Mr McNama

ra also paid tribute to colleague Mrs Sandra Coulter, who died in June this year. She had taught PE at the school

since 1988 and was described as a “very effective teacher who would be very sadly missed.” A special award in her memory,

donated by her husband, Mr John Coulter, was presented for the first time on the night. Head boy Ben Ellison and head girl Laura Makinson, proposed the

vote of thanks. But tha t was not the end of the

celebrations, as an Awards Day held at the school the following morning, celebrated the achievements of cur rent pupils.
