then, and much of the credit for the revolu tion goes to the BMW X5, a car which showed that you did not need tractor dri ving skills to own a luxury 4x4. Of course, the big manufacturers had to
play catch up, and as a result there is now a wider selection than ever of talented luxury 4x4s to choose from, but if you want some thing a little older you will notice a drop off in terms of sophistication. Many will question the whole concept
behind luxury 4x4s in the first instance. None of these cars will tow or go through the mud and undergrowth any better than the more utilitarian Family 4x4s in the next class down. In fact, family 4x4s like the Land Rover
Discovery, Isuzu Trooper or Toyota Land Cruiser Colorado will probably do the job better. Though their engines might be smaller, they will still do the job and cost you less at the pumps while doing so. They are unlikely to be as compromised either, both in terms of suspension and ride height. Finally, you will be much less con cerned about getting them dirty.
Cheap and Cheerful Options Mk II model Range Rovers are always a
solid bet, but if you need something with a little more attitude then the Jeep Grand Cherokee makes a decent option. Lexus’ RX300 is probably one of the better bets if you do not plan to go near any mud and despite being replaced by a revised shape car, the design still looks agreeably fresh.
Affordable Mid-Rangers The Toyota Landcruiser Amazon makes
a great choice if you genuinely need acres of space and want something that can still cut the mustard off-road. Most buyers in this sector prefer something a little more urbane and this tends to boil down to either a BMW X5 or a Mercedes M Class. Both have their plus points. If you are going to use the vehicle solely on road, the BMW would be our choice, but if you need a true dual purpose luxury 4x4, there is still little to touch the Mercedes ML270CDi.
Desirable • But Potentially Pricey Most will still plump for a Range Rover,
in this instance the post 2002 series I I I model the Upper range BMW X5 and the Mercedes M-class model. If you have really got bags of cash, the more modern con tenders include the Volvo XC90, the Volk swagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne.

likely tha t the car in question will have been used - or over-used - for heavy towing purposes. As usual, uneven steering will give the game away if the buyer has been less than honest. Insist on a lengthy test drive.
