A DRIVING FORCE IN THE RIBBLE VALLEY power stee rin g _____-................. ... ■ ■■................................£1750 ....................................£10,495 Borough’s big win

Ribble Valley Borough . .2 Colne United.......... .. .1 THE Badgers secured an important home win over Colne United on Saturday after nerves aplenty at the .- Rolls-Royce sports ground. An early fourth minute

of the match Liam Lishman,

the Badgers were always in control. Borough now face Sabden

on Saturday. Chatburn

strike from Dave Cook; impressive as it was, failed to spark a goal rush. One of many pin-point ■

crosses from the ever consis tent Craig Dewhurst found its way to Cook, who drove a right-foot shot low to the keeper’s left, leaving the Colne shot stopper little chance. Unusually, the goal was

followed by a lull in proceed ings, but this proved short lived as in the 22nd minute an exposed back line were beaten by a well-taken Colne equaliser to wake the Valley- men from their slumber. Colne, although spirited,

rarely threatened after this, and following successive league defeats seemed con tent with a point. Concerted pressure for the

Valleymen 10 minutes prior to the half-time whistle was to set the tone for the second half. The versatile Simon Tat-

tersall, moving to left back allowing the highly-rated Fazackerley his preferred right back berth, was unlucky not to send Antho ny Clarkson's men into the lead with a 20-yard grass cutter. With the assured, vocal

Martin Seedall in goal behind the silk and steel combination of Brown and Berry, midfield minder Paul Chadwick was able to push on, but with top marksman Paul Chippendale suffering a rare blank, it was left to cap tain marvel Cook to power home the winning header on 75 minutes. The Valley skipper almost

completed a sensational hat- trick five minutes later with an outrageous 35-yard how itzer th a t left the brave Colne keeper counting his fingers. Centre back Pete Berry

tried to better this moments later, but this particular rush of blood went unrewarded. There were a couple of late

scores for the Valleymen, one of them rescued by a magnif icent last-gasp tackle from Tattersall. However a draw would

have been an injustice, as, with performances from Stu- - a r t Brown and Craig Dewhurst aligned to the nonchalant majesty of man

Horton .......................... 2 A HAT-TRICK from New ton helped Chathum twice come from behind to win this Craven and District League Cup tie in extra time. The locals started the bet

ter of the two sides and soon got hold of the game to play some good football. However, despite both

teams creating chances to score early on, it was Chat- burn who took a deserved lead. Newton . and Luke

Hodgkinson linked up well before Newton threaded the ball across the box for Thom son to finish. Chatburn continued to

dominate the first half, but rued missed chances and gave away an equaliser just before half-time. After the break Horton

hit back with true resolve to put increasing pressure on the Chatbum back four, and this paid off 10 minutes into the half when the visitors took the lead. But just as it looked as

though Horton were to cruise to a 2-1 victory, Chat burn rose to the challenge and Newton scored his first of the afternoon with a delightful run to score with an equally excellent finish. Full-time came, and for

extra time, Richards came on to control the back four and Simon Hodgkinson went up the field to partner Newton in attack. This tactical change paid

off when Hargreaves kicked the ball long, Simon Hodgkinson dummied, and Newton chipped the keeper from distance. Although Horton had

their chances to equalise, it remained 3-2 after the first period of extra-time. Chatburn had their tails

up and soon into the second half, Newton and Simon Hodgkinson linked up well with some great one-touch football that opened up the visitors’ defence for Newton to blast home. This goal knocked the

stuffing out of Horton and Newton got his hat-trick to kill the game off. Tarleton Corinthians . . .0 Chipping ........................6 CHIPPING showed why they have made such a good start to the season in this drubbing of Tarleton.

Collinson, Ross, Garth

and Dean Austin have proved to be a solid back four, while the pace, skill and endeavour of Kenny Leece and Daniel Austin is proving too hot to handle. Against Tarleton, the

tenacious pairing of John and Mick Hayhurst on the left, and the more cultured Johnny Fletcher and Dave

, Ross on the right provided, chances galore. And it was Hayhurst Jnr

who created the opener, when he whipped in a free- kick for Joe Baines to score with a thumping header. Austin then skinned his marker and slid his shot under the keeper for number two. A third Chipping goal

came when Leece poked a shot under the advancing keeper, and an unfortunate Corinthian made a desperate attempt to clear, only to find himself in the back of the net with the ball. After the break the goals

continued to flood in. Fletcher was first to react

when the Corinthians keeper spilled a fierce shot for Cldp- ping’s fourth. Austin then lobbed the

keeper, the ball bounced up mid came out off the under side of the bar, where Richard Baines was on hand to score number five with an flick. In the dying seconds,

Austin turned his marker and from 20 yards out swept a sweet left-footed shot into the top corner to cap the game off with his second and dripping’s sixth goal. Crosshills....................... 2 Grindleton

............1

A POOR performance from Grindleton saw the locals crash out of the league cup. Although i t is only

Grindleton’s second defeat all season, they had led the game 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Rick Barrow strika But manager Shaun

Lloyd warned his team that if they did not improve in the second half then they were heading for defeat, and his prediction came trua First a penalty was con

ceded 10 minutes into the second half, and still with no improvement from the locals, a dubious off-side decision allowed the Crosshills striker to run near

ly 30 yards to round the keeper and score. Grindleton had several

• half-chances but could not convert any, whereas Crosshills, once on top, seemed to gain confidence

and kept Grindleton under

pressure until the end. Grindleton Reserves . . .10 McBrides .......... ........... .1 GRINDLETON Reserves put in their best performance of the season in this Craven League Cup match against McBrides.

. Bennett put Grindleton 1-

0 ahead early in the match, but McBrides soon equalised following a free-kick. Further goals from Gary

Hickling, Docherty and Daniel Fawcette put the locals 4-1 up by half-time. Early in the second half,

Fawcette converted a penal ty for his second after a McBride defender handled ■ in the area. A further two goals from

Stuart Hickling and an own goal on the hour Mowed to put the game out of McBrides’ reach. Docherty then scored his

second with 10 minutes to go and Ray Powell netted a rare goal in the final minute of thegama Rimington

Sab den...........................2 RIMINGTON continued their winning streak but had to twice come from behind to stamp their authority on the

gama The home side started well and Sabden had to thank

. their keeper for keeping them in the game with a double save as he tipped Zulfi’s header on to the post and then blocked the rebound ' effort from Mankowski. Sabden were first to score

when an innocuous push by Kershaw resulted in a penal ty that Czapowski convert ed, although the keeper almost kept it out. Rimington hit back

immediately, and a fine move down the right between Watkins and Coulter was finished by a Zulfi header. Sabden then regained the

lead on the hour when the ball fell loose from a comer and was lashed into the top comer of the net. Rimington were then

awarded a penalty in similar circumstances to Sabden’s, but Coulter dragged his effort well wide. Liam Carter replaced the

' home' side irito the lead for the first time. Martin Law- son also found the net with a header but a foul was given.

tiring Zulfi and scored with his first touch as he latched onto a throughball to beat the keeper’s dive. Paul Haythornthwaite then headed in to take the

. The visitors piled forward

in a desperate attempt to force an equaliser and Ker shaw brilliantly tipped away a cross-shot from the edge of the box. Rimington now face two

tough games a t home to Enfield and Stacksteads respectively, games which they need to win if they are to compete with the top sides / this season. Grassington Reserves . . .2 Waddington Reserves. . .1 WADDINGTON crashed out of the Norman P ra t t ; Trophy despite a brave fight against higher division oppo nents. The game started lively

with both teams creating chances, but it was the York shire side who went closest from a comer when a result-, ing shot looked to h ave' crossed the line only for the referee to wave on. The deadlock was finely

broken when a visiting for- - ward broke through to slot. home from 10 yards. : Jim Tierney- and . Ian

Hopcroft were strong in defence with Wayrie Leach again impressive in the Waddington goal. In the second half

Waddington came out the stronger side and equalised through Kieron Keough, who acrobatically fired home with his back to goal. More chances were made

by both sides before Grass- ington grabbed the winner. The home side's striker .

lobbed over Leach when the referee should have ruled for offside, perhaps this was jus tice for the earlier decision that went the other way. Both Waddington teams

are back in action on Satur day as the first team travel to Gargrave and the reserves are at home to Earby Town. The first team are to meet

at the Waddington Anns for 1245 p.m;, while the reserves meet at the ground for 1 p.m. If unavailable please ring Nick Laxton (429018). Training is now on Mon

day nights at Roefield from 8-30 p.m. to 10 p.m. All play ers to attend.

Kickboxing ace targets title repeat

By PHIL SIMPSON

CURRENT British Light Heavy weight Freestyle Kickboxing Champion Luke Holt is back on the road to defending his title. The Clitheroe Kickboxing Club

star will travel to York on Novem ber 24th, looking to repeat his tremendous victory last time out. Twelve months ago, he won the

fight in just 18 seconds, and is cur rent three-time defending champi on.

Luke, 24, has been involved in

contact sport since he was seven, gaining a brown belt in Shotakan karate before switching to boxing at the age of 11.

Holt then went on to gain a

100% amateur record from his 13 fights, before starting up kickbox ing at 17. After claiming the PSQ British

Kickboxing Championships in less than a round in 2000, he has held the title ever since. And if he manages a further

defence in the White Rose county, he is hoping to give up the amateur ranks and turn professional. Luke is on the lookout for a spon

sor in order to achieve his goal, as he cannot afford to give up work in order to switch his full attentions to the sport. Anyone interested in backing him can ring 07729 482377.

Budweiser Boys hit by early goal blast

DESPITE a 3-1 defeat against high flying Stanley Street Old Boys, Dog Inn manager Simon Kerins praised his players after

-they recovered from a nightmare;' start. ‘ Slack marking and poor com- ’ munication helped the Accring

ton side, described by Kerins.as “the best side that we have ever faced”, to take a three-goal lead with barely half an hour played. However, building on an

improved end to the half, the Budweiser Boys turned in a superb second half display and

Clitheroe Cavaliers 2nds . . . . .64 Skipton 2nds ............................. .12 THE Cavaliers notched their first win of the season at the third attempt as they ran in 10 tries against local rivals Skiptori. New skipper r-Mick Rowley

demanded a return to the open run ning rugby that had been the trade-

'mark of the Clitheroe second string, and his team responded brilliantly as the backs claimed eight of the team’s five pointers.

- The game was played in tremen

dous spirit, typified by Dave Tatter-, sail and Paul Proctor, who gamely played for. the Skipton team to bring them up to a full compliment of 15. Fielding one of the largest packs of

forwards seen in second team colours,: the Cavaliers dominated possession in both open play and at set pieces. - - Simon Hall made the line out his

own, and the ppwerful front row ofi Oldrdyd, Byrne and Rawstron were more than a match for the opposite numbers. In the backs, Edward Thornber

scored his debut try for the club after charging down a clearance; while cen-, tres Ben Curphy and Alex'Hough had.
