beefed up with a bunch of macho off-roader accoutrements and you are in the right ball park. But is the 1.4-litre Streetwise the ulti mate sheep in wolf’s clothing or a pragmatic response to a latent demand that has only recently raised its head? MG Rover claims this urban-tough attitude
is a key driver for many customers buying small 4x4s. Although they appreciated the raised driving position and tough plastic cladding to fend off supermarket trolleys etc, many buyers of small 4x4s were not too enam oured of mediocre fuel economy, flabby steer ing and roly-poly handling. What if a product could be developed that gave them more of
what they liked and a little less of the rest? The marketing heads at MG Rover reckon
the Streetwise is just that product. It is cer tainly priced attractively, the 1.4-litre version I examine here opening proceedings at just £9,295; To put that into perspective, the basic 1.4-litre Rover 25 starts at £8,690 so it is not too much of a premium to drive a car that looks both tougher and more modem. The entry-level L4-litre engine is the same
84 b.h.p. power plant that powers entry-level Rover 25 models Nevertheless it is capable of a reasonable turn of speed, propelling the car
through 60 m.p.h. in 12 seconds on the way to 105m.p.h. . The Streetwise is clearly a car of necessity.
MG Rover has to make the most of what it has until all-new models arrive in 2005. A major part of that will be an imminent facelift programme but more ingenuity than this will be required if the company is to keep sales at break-even point. At least the Streetwise is
evidence that this exists at Longbridge. When styling chief Peter Stevens noticed that his junior designers were not driving Rovers, he asked them to design a car they would drive. The 25-based Streetwise is the result.
Increasing trend But is there really a market for a car like
this? Well obviously, MG Rover thinks so. The company points to an increasing trend for small-car buyers to seek a more personalised variation in style and configuration - the so- called urban on-roader. The Streetwise seems to meet this brief - robust, versatile and styl ish, a small car that is fun to drive, handy in traffic, easy to park and able to shrug off hard use by active individuals and young families. One of the first things you will notice in the
showroom is the uncompromising Volvo XC70/Audi Allroad-style front end. The Streetwise has the front bumper and grille
formed in a tough unpainted grained mould ing. The same resilient material, resistant to
chipping and scratches, is used for the whee- larch spats, sill mouldings, side rubbing strips, rear bumper and tailgate lift handle. Beefy roof bars, securely bolted to the roof on all Streetwise models, are similar to those fitted to the Rover 75 Tourer, and accept the same kind of cross bars and carrying systems for loads up to 65 kg. As standard, unique five- spoke 16 in. ahoy wheels are available from the mid-range upwards but entry models must put up with 15 in. steel'wheels with drilled centres and kerb-proof centre hub covers. In keeping with its extrovert character, the Streetwise offers up to 12 exterior paint choices from the strongest colours in the MG Rover palette, including the vivid Trophy Yellow and Tro phy Blue finishes. The MG Rover Streetwise 1.4-litre may
seem something of a fraud but when you pause to consider how we really use our cars in the
urban sprawl and crawl, it makes sense. With a raised driving position and rugged bumpers that can see off parking scrapes, it is a good deal more practical than the accompanying “lifestyle” marketing baloney would lead you to suspect..

INDSIGHT is a fantastic thing. Looking back, Honda’s decision to ignore the fledgling diesel market

plants of its type. More soundproofing and thicker window glass help to isolate the diesel grumble and it is genuinely tricky to aurally differentiate it from a petrol engine at normal cruising speeds. You will know it is a diesel when you put
your foot down. The 340Nm of torque mean that it is the most torquey Honda engine currently available. The sprint to 60 m.p.h. will detain you for
just 9.2 seconds in the saloon or 9.9 seconds if you are hauling the additional bulk of the Tourer. Emissions are another area where the
Honda excels, already complying with the tough Euro IV regulations that will slice another three per cent from company user’s tax demands. The figures of 143 and 153g/km for the saloon and Tourer respec-

tively are excellent given that the Accord is such a substantial feeling vehicle. ' Honda is surprisingly cautious about the
Accord 2.2i-CTDi, claiming that it will command one-third of all UK Accord sales or, in real terms, around 6,000 cars per year. With a more affordable entry-level car, I would predict it to nudge the figure closer to 50% of all domestic sales and it should have no problem achieving at least that propor tion of sales in Europe.

tender aiming to make the leap from main stream to premium product positioning and this diesel engine does its chances no harm. With its aura of quality, reputation for engi neering excellence and sharp styling, the Accord was always off to a good start. Fac tor in an engine that is bound to be a hit and you end up with nothing less than a five-star
car.

plumbed into the front of an Alfa 156. The latest development is this 16-valve 140 b.h.p. Multijet version of that engine which offers more power, reduced noise levels yet still posts competitive fuel economy and emissions figures. The Multijet system takes the idea of
pilot injection-squirting a small amount of fuel into the cylinder to prime the combustion chamber for the main igni tion process - and refines it still further. As well as hitting a top speed of 130
m.p.h. and accelerating through 60 m.p.h. in nine seconds, the saloon version
will average nearly 48 m.p.g. and emit 157g/km of carbon dioxide. Prices open at £17,240 for the Turismo saloon ver sion, ranging right up to £20,010 for the Veloce Sportwagon. With the battle in the diesel sector
hotting up nicely, the 140 b.h.p. Multi jet diesel could not have come at a better time for Alfa Romeo. With Honda, Audi and BMW all
offering sporty, well-finished diesels one might be forgiven for thinking Alfa was in danger of getting elbowed ‘out of the way. But that is not the case.
