Brewery’s grant boosts Chris’s work with blind
by Duncan Smith
A BRAILLE teacher from Clitheroe has a new resource at his fingertips, thanks to a £1,500 grant from Blackburn-based brewer
Daniel Thwaites Pic. Chris Tattersall (50), of Chatbum Road, teaches Braille in Clitheroe and Blackburn to students who
are blind, visually impaired or sighted. Now his job has been made much quicker and easier
a f te r buying a Braille embosser, a machine th a t “prints” Braille text direct from his computer. Previously he had to use a manual device - a kind
• of Braille typewriter - to produce teaching materials for his students. “Instead of producing material laboriously by hand
I can now produce Braille texts in seconds to use for re ad in g p ra c t ic e , exercises o r as te a ch in g re s ources,’’said Chris. “I t has really made a big difference and I ’m very
g ra te fu l to T hw a ite s for i ts help. I approached Thwaites when I heard about its Charitable Trust and
then applied for a grant. I was delighted when I heard I ’d got it.” Chris started to lose his sight due to a rare virus
when he was 29. His condition worsened steadily and, a t 39, he was forced to give up his job as an electri cian’s mate a t Castle Cement. I t took him some time to come to terms with losing
his sight, but joining Clitheroe’s award-winning Skill Share scheme was a major step on the road to recov ery. I t offers free courses to adult learners in a wide range of subjects. “Skill Share was the first place I felt comfortable
and was a stepping stone to Bolton College,” said Chris. He gained his Standard English Braille Certifi cate in 1998 and went on to become Bolton College Student of the Year and North West Adult Learner of the Year, both in 2000. Now he has come full circle, returning to Skill Share to set up and run a Braille course a t its I.T. Learning
Centre in the old Co-op buildings in Henthorn Road. He also teaches Braille a t the Resource Centre for the Sensory Impaired in Swallow Street, Blackburn, and a t Bolton College. An added bonus with the new machine is th at Chris
can now produce match programmes in Braille for fel low Blackburn Rovers fans who are blind or visually impaired. He h a s been a fan since his teens and approached the club about producing a Braille pro gramme. “They were keen to help and now they e-mail arti

Lancashire County Council, asking for the problem to be investigated. I t was suggested th a t either the culvert be
