Winger Whiteside stars in triumph

Loslock..................... 10 Clitheroe...................31 THE men from Littlemoor warmed up for next week’s league fixture with a com fortable victory over Lostock on Saturday. Captain Matt Dugdale

was in the unusual position of having a full squad to choose from, and also, the use of a complete set of substitutes. Will Jones returned to

the front row, allowing vet eran Roger Holmes to move into his favoured number seven shirt. Dave Watson also made

his long-awaited return at scrum-half, to renew his halfback pairing with the enthusiastic Nathan Peel. Playing into the wind in

the first half, the visitors were forced to defend for long period, but did take

the lead somewhat against the run of play when flying wingman Pete Whiteside went over in the corner. The lead was short-lived

as the hosts hit back, quickly followed by a penalty to give them a 10-7 halftime lead. However, the second half

belonged to the Maroon and Golds, as they ran in 24 unanswered points. • The scrum looked solid

as the second row partner ship of Ben Graves and Dugdale provided plenty of power. Tries came at regular

intervals - Ben Curphey, Peel, and Edward Finch- Hacking all crossed the whitewash, whilst the try of the match fell again to Whiteside who notched his second of the game after a flowing seven-man move.

Chairman’s delight over home draw in FA Vase

By CRAIG SALMON

CLITHEROE chairman Dave Burgess was delighted after the draw for the fifth round of the Carlsberg FA Vase paired Clitheroe at home to Devizes Town. The Blues booked their passage

into the last 16 of the competition with a battling 1-0 win over Ryman League outfit Ware on Saturday. Wiltshire-based club Devizes hail

from the Screwfix Direct Western League Premier Division - the

same division which boasted both Chippenham Town and Taunton Town before they both won promo tion. Taunton and Chippenham were

hope it would intimidate them a lit tle bit.” ;The former first-team manager

feels the club’s recent performances in the Vase illustrates that Clitheroe are without doubt one of the strongest teams in the country

■at this level. He added: “We reached the final

in 1996 and in the last three seasons we have got to the semi-final, the quarter-final and now the last 16 and obviously with an excellent chance of progressing further. “By it happening every season, it

just goes to show that it is no fluke. “Out of 5/600 teams who entered

first and second respectively in the league when Clitheroe met them in the Vase two years ago, Devizes are currently third from bottom, hav ing won only two league games all season. Burgess said; “I don’t think we

could have asked for a better draw. “I listened to it live and it was a

massive relief not to get drawn against one of the other two North West Counties’ teams left in the competition. “When the first 10 names came

one of them. “But, fortunately, Prescot and

Mossley were the next two names out, so that was a massive relief for us.

“We don’t really want another

NWC team in the Vase because we know them inside out and they know us inside out, it just tightens the game up. “But I think it gives us an advan

out and there were still us, Prescot and Mossley still to be drawn and there were only six names left in the hat, I thought we were going to get

tage getting drawn against a team not from our league because they won’t know that much about us, they will look at our position in the league table and also our past record in the Vase, and you would

the competition back at the start of the season, we consistently reach the later stages of the competition, and that proves that we are one of the best sides at our level in the country. “Devizes have played seven

games to get this far so they’ll be well up for the game, but they are not like Taunton or Chippenham and we proved when we played them that we are more than capa ble of holding our own against them. “But deep down, we feel we have

got the best draw and it’s now up to us to turn it into a victory.” Young striker Gary Jackson and

goalkeeper Kris Richens proved to be the heroes on Saturday.

Jackson notched the all-impor

tant goal midway through the half and Richens kept that lead intact with a fine penalty save in the sec

ond half. Burgess added: “It wasn’t a great

performance but it was a cup game and we got the win which put us into the hat. “We could have been 4-0 up in

the first half but second half I thought we were poor. “But, in fairness, Kris Richens

has only gone to ground twice throughout the whole game and one of them was for the penalty.” Burgess also paid a special trib

ute to the 150 or so supporters who made the long trip down to Hert- forshire. The attendance of 520 was the biggest anywhere in the Vase. “The fans were absolutely tremen

dous. There was about 150 who went down and the players appreciate it, it gives them a massive lift.” Tuesday’s match versus Holker

Old Boys in the Marsden Lan cashire Challenge Trophy was post poned because of a waterlogged

pitch. The tie will now take place

tonight at Shawbridge, kick-off 7- 45 p.m. The Blues have a big injury doubt over leading goalscorer Lee Cryer. On Saturday, Clitheroe travel to

Ware ................................................0 Clitheroe........................... .............1 CLITHEROE moved through to the last 16 of the Carlsberg FA Vase with a battling victory over Ryman League Second Division outfit Ware. Young striker Gary Jackson capi

talised on a defensive blunder to give the Blues the lead midway through the first half, and that proved to be the winning goal. However, it was goalkeeper Kris

Richens who came to the rescue of his side with a brilliant penalty save in the second half, after he had harshly been penalised for a foul by the referee. Clitheroe dominated the first half

from start to finish. The youthful-looking home team

seemed to be overawed by the occa sion, and only some fine goalkeeping kept Ware in the game. Efforts from Jason Jones, Chris

Whittingham and Jackson were all superbly saved by goalkeeper Lee Robinson. The goal came midway through the

half when a slack defensive back pass was latched onto by Jackson, and he confidently placed the ball around the keeper with the outside of his right

foot. The half ended with the Blues well

on top, but with only a slender lead to their name. Things changed dramatically in the

second half, and Ware played much better, while Clitheroe struggled to get their normal passing game going. The tie was decided midway

through the half when Richens was harshly adjudged to have fouled Kevin Cooper while cleanly punching the ball away. The resulting penalty was struck hard and low by Greg Mayes, but Richens dived to his right and saved magnificently. There were a few more anxious

moments as seven minutes of added time was played, but the Blues held on for a crucial victory.

Parker nets on Reserves debut

Atherton L R ................0 A D EBU T goal for new signing Matt Parker gave Clitheroe Reserves their ninth win of the season on. Saturday over Atherton Laburnum Rovers. The unbeaten Blues,

Clitheroe Reserves . . 1

who have not played for five weeks, showed glimpses of class and had the visitors on the back- foot from the start. Matt Garner, Martin Fletcher, Danny Potts and Danny Stanley all had good chances to open the scoring, but poor finishing

let them down. A saved penalty from

Garner didn’t help Clitheroe’s cause, but they finally broke the deadlock when Gamer presented fel low ex-Doncaster Rovers striker Parker with a chance that he gratefully accepted. The second half was a

similar story to the first, with the defence coping well with what little Ather ton could offer. Potts had a header

cleared off the line, while Andy Preston’s pinpoint cross was headed home by Mike Ashton, but the effort was ruled out for off side. Manager Lee “Suggs”

Boyer said: “Despite the narrow scoreline, this was a good workout and a game

beaten once in our last 23 games. We have a tough test on Saturday when we travel to title rivals Curzon Ashton.” ’’ NORTHWEST
