for Clitheroe in the first half, but they went in a t the break 1-0 down courtesy of a sixth-minute strike from the visitors. The second half saw Astin and

DESPITE moving up an age band to Under 17, Clitheroe athlete Anna Grif fiths more than held her own at the North of England Junior Indoor Championships in Manchester. Competing a t the Commonwealth

Games indoor facility, Anna matched her expectations, and broke a number of per sonal bests in an impressive showing. On Saturday, using a new, heavier shot

putt, and a brand new throwing tech nique, Anna recorded a fine 8.10m to fin ish sixth overall. She then moved on to the 60m hurdles,

where she aimed to reach the final, against specialist hurdlers. Anna broke her previous best by almost

two-hundredths of a second in the heat, running 9.49 seconds, but the best was to come. In the final, Anna smashed that mark,

running 9.34 seconds to finish fourth - an agonising three-hundredths of a second off a bronze medal. The following day Anna returned to

take part in the 200m, where she was handed the unwanted inside bend. Regardless, Anna reached the semi

final, and came away with a new personal indoor best of 27.7 seconds, finishing ninth overall. Anna is next in action at the weekend

when she travels to Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena - the venue for the World Indoor Championships in March - for the AAA Championships, where she will compete in the 60m hurdles, shot and 60m flat. Although she will not train in between

the events, Anna is back in weight train ing at Hicks, after the recent refurbish ment.

Leaders’ unbeaten run ended by Waddington

Waddington.....................................5 Lothersdale........... ............................3 WADDINGTON’S early season form continued after a three-week break at the weekend, as the previously unbeaten league leaders were swept aside. The home side went ahead early on

through Bootham, and were only denied more goals by the athleticism of the visit ing keeper. Lothersdale equalised against the run

of play thanks to a free-kick, but the hosts restored their lead just three min utes later, with a free-kick of their own from Simon Cunliffe.

After a second equaliser just before the

break, Waddington came out for the sec ond half full of confidence, and were rewarded with Mark Boyd’s first goal in five seasons. I t was 4-2 as Cunliffe added his second,

but Waddington were pegged back again to 4-3 with 20 minutes still to play. But the home side made the game safe

with a well-executed strike from Matt Pope, to earn Waddington all three points. Waddington’s next game is on Satur

day, when they travel to Horton in the quarter-final of the Division Cup, meet Waddington Arms 12-15 p.m.

Rimington ease through in Morrison Cup cruise

Rimington.........................................3 Embsag ............................................. 0 RIMINGTON progressed comfortably

through to the next round of the Morrison Cup thanks to victory over Embsay. The homesters never looked like they

were going to lose this game after they started very strongly, and produced some iexcellent passing football. They took the lead early in the game

when former Clitheroe striker Jon Penman poked the ball home after the visitors failed to clear. Rimington dominated and went further

ahead after a good move down the left was finished by Tom O’Neill, who slotted the

ball past the advancing keeper. The second half was much the same as

the first with the home defence rarely trou bled. Complacency set in a little and play ers started to dribble the hall rather than pass it. A moment of inspiration from Shaun

McCullough increased their lead as he curled the ball into the net with the outside of his right foot from 25-yards. Rimington would have scored more had

it not been for the Embsay keeper, who pulled-off some excellent saves. Rimington are in President’s Cup action

against derby rivals Craven Heifer at home on Saturday.
