Extra ward boundaries for May elections

PEOPLE casting their vote may have to go to a different polling station when the Ribble Valley Borough Council four-yearly elections are held on May 1st. The electoral review has brought in new

ward boundaries for the area. For instance, Clitheroe, previously divided

into four wards, is now split into five. Under plans unveiled to members of the

Policy and Finance Committee this week by Director of Legal Services Mr Paul Timson, it is proposed that voters in the Edisford and Low Moor ward will vote at Henthom Com munity Centre and St Anne’s Court. St Mary’s ward voters will go to the grammar school in York Street and Littlemoor Ward voters will go to Ribblesdale High School. They are planning for voters in the Salthill

ward to vote at the grammar school in Chat- burn Road. Negotiations are going on with the school to find suitable arrangements, Mr Timson told the committee. Longridge, which was previously divided

into two wards, will in future be divided into three wards. In May, voters in the new Alston ward will vote in the parish room of St Lawrence Church and voters in the new Dil- worth and Derby wards will both vote at Lon gridge Civic Hall at separate polling stations. Another major difference will be for voters

at Little Mitton. Previously they had to travel to Barrow

School. The new arrangements mean Little Mitton is included in the Whalley ward and they will vote at All Hallows Church, Mitton, along with voters from Mitton. Mr Timson is looking forward to a slight

reduction in elections costs. This year there are only 50 polling stations needed, four less than in previous elections.

All set for heavy plant auction

A YOUN G Ribble Valley businessman is hop ing that interest in his second auction of industrial and farm plant and machinery on Saturday will result in an even more successful sale than his first. Already, customers from throughout

Europe have expressed interest in Gateway Auctions' sale with £500,000-worth of goods entered. Proprietor Mr David Sunderland (24), of

Chaigley, hopes to add more interest by incor porating a “drive by” collective contractors' plant auction sale. The auctions specialise in the disposal of excavators, dozers, tractors, skid steers, fork lift trucks, commercial vehi cles, loading shovels, tele-handlers, trailers, agricultural machines, etc. The sale, on land at Gisbum Auction Mart,

will feature an undercover viewing and seat ing area past which all the machines will be driven as they are being sold. Owing to the success of the first auction in

November last year, the company, headed by Mr Sunderland, has taken another acre of hard standing area to allow better areas for viewing. In addition the keys will be available for prospective purchasers to “try before you buy”. Mr Sunderland added: “The success of the

first sale from our Gisburn site exceeded all our expectations in terms of overall realisa tions (which was over £400,000) and atten dance of buyers. We hope the changes we are implementing will build on that success and improve both the stature of the business and the local economy.” A former pupil of Longridge High School,

he studied for the Royal Institute of Char tered Surveryors' valuation surveying qualifi cation in Manchester and says he saw a gap in the plant auction market in the Ribble Valley, which last year he decided to plug. With his own web site: www.gatewayauc-

tions.com, interest has already spiralled and Mr Sunderland is confident Saturday's sale should be even better than his first.
