ERCEDES may be synonymous to most as a purveyor of the world’s finest luxury cars, but it has more than one string to its bow.


As well as some of the most desirable, the


Stuttgart company also offers some of the most innovative and sensible cars around. What is more, that three-pointed star on the bonnet is not necessarily the sign of a badge snob. Take the Vaneo 1.7 CDI for example. Does this look like a vehicle driven by some­ body overly concerned with their image? The Vaneo’s tall profile makes its wheels' appear minuscule and it is not a vehicle that you would choose for gaining admiring looks. Having said that, it is probably the least offen­ sively styled of all the smaller mini MPVs, some of which are quite an affront to the eye­ ball. With its A-class style nose and its neat detailing, the Vaneo has a certain appeal. Should you find yourself drawn to it, it makes sense to specify it with the best available engine, which is the 1.7-litre CDI diesel. With 91 b.h.p. on tap from the common rail


diesel engine and a surprisingly capacious body to haul around, the Vaneo 1.7CDi is never going to be a drag strip hero, and a sprint-to-60 m.p.h. of 16 seconds bears this fact out. These vehicles are not bought for their ability to stick the family pet to the rear window, however, and most owners will be more concerned with more sensible yardsticks. Things like residual value, carrying capacity, fuel economy and build quality are factors that count and on each of these scores it is gen­ uinely difficult to pick faulty with the Vaneo. Sipping diesel at the rate of 48 miles per gal­


lon, the Vaneo CDI is not going to earn you many tiger tokens. Business users will also be attracted by its impressive cleanliness, emit­ ting a mere 157g/km of carbon dioxide. Both of these figures go some way to offsetting the initial purchase price which is, it has to be said, towards the upper range of such vehicles. The CDI range kicks off with the £16,555 Trend. Specify this car with the ACS clutchless man­ ual gearbox and you will pay £17,055, and opt for one with a conventional automatic box and you will need £17,790.


Residual value, carrying capacity, fuel economy and build quality? The Vaneo 1.7 CDI has them covered

Ambiente trim levels retail at £17,355 and £18,455 respectively. The realisation that this vehicle will retain 55% of its value over three years means that it will cost far less in depreci­ ation than most mainstream mini-MPVs. On a cost per mile basis, the Vaneo CDI Family


• is cheaper to run than a Daewoo Tacuma. Torque, the abiding characteristic of most


diesel engines, is predictably good, the diesel Vaneo making the ACS and automatic gear­ boxes less of a chore than they are with the


petrol cars. It is not the quietest engine that Mercdes has ever produced, a fact not helped by the cavernous space behind you which leads to some booming at certain speeds, but when accelerated up to typical motorway velocities the Vaneo 1.7 CDi is by no means noisy. The 4,192 mm long Vaneo sits on a very


long wheelbase of 2.9 metres and on rather wide tracks (1,524 mm front and 1,477 mm rear) making for a different footprint to the A-


Class. All this is just as well, for to stand any


chance of competing with Scenics and Zafiras, this car needs to be a lot larger than Mercedes’ entry-level model. True enough, a highish roofline of 1830 mm is coupled to an interior height of 1240 mm to give an agreeably airy


feel to the cabin. Remove the rear seats and you have got 1810mm of length in the rear cargo bay. You would not want to repeat this procedure too often, however as they are


rather heavy. At first glance the Vaneo 1.7 CDi appears


something of an expensive irrelevance. Here is a car that is not as sophisticated as many of the mini-MPVs against which it competes on price, lacking many of their ingenious features. As a real world proposition, however, the Vaneo excels.
