THE way Ribble Valley Borough Council is run has passed the test set by a top international firm of audi

warning th a t red tape from the Govern ment is putting undue pressure on council officials who should be given more help. The annual management letter by Price-
waterhouse Coopers praises the council for being "a well-managed authority which cares about the services provided to the citizens". The report from auditors Mr Lee Childs
and Mr Steve Brown, presented to the Policy and Finance Committee on Tuesday night, states that the challenges of modernisation have proved "quite difficult" in the last year. The introduction from Mr Childs stated:
"Ribble Valley is, in my opinion, an authority which is fairly traditional and proud of the way in which it operates. "There will be difficulties in introducing a

Pointing out that the committee structure
changes had been brought in at the insistence of the Government, Coun Richard Sherras, asked Mr Brown for advice on how the coun cil could spend money on services instead of "box-ticking for the Government." Mr Brown replied: "I don't have the

Burglary suspects held after pursuit by police
TWO men have been arrested in connection with burglaries in which cars have been stolen to take away property, thanks to observant Ribble Valley people. A Whalley resident alerted
the police after a break in at a property in Whalley at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Two men were pursued by
the police, but after a long chase the car they were travel ling in crashed near Great Har wood and one of them was detained. After a further pursuit, dur

ing which the second man attempted to steal a car, he was also arrested. A police helicopter was used in the operation and was active
over the Great Harwood, Simonstone and Read areas late on Tuesday night. After a number of local bur
glaries, police suspected that cars were being stolen in Man chester and being driven to the Ribble Valley where offenders were breaking into homes. I t was also thought that the
culprits were then stealing a local car to make the return journey. Insp. Bob Ford, of Clitheroe
police, said he wished to thank local people for being obser vant and passing on their sus picions.
He added that the arrests
were a result of the actions of the public, followed up by good police work.

Biography volunteers
FOUR people have inquired about writing the biography of Clitheroe ex- German soldier Mr Kurt Rech. The item about Mr
Rech’s life in last week’s Advertiser and Times cre ated a lot of interest- two of the inquirers have mili tary history experience and two have written on other subjects. There is still time for
others to come forward. It could well be some time before Mr Rech makes an arrangement with anyone to write his biography.

THE first Saturday store sheep and store cattle sale was held at Clitheroe Auction Mart last week. It is to be a monthly sale and
store lambs to £38.50. Total sheep numbers of 324 saw all but two sheep sold. The entry of 53 cattle saw a
demand as good as the usual fort nightly Friday sales and plenty of fresh faces around the ring as poten tial buyers. The small bulls on green cards
looked very dear indeed, as did the majority of smaller heifers which looked to have improved by £40-£50 per head since autumn. ' Large Friesian Holstein steers on
red cards made to £400 and 18-month Limousin heifers to £368, both for Mr B. Taylor. The verdict was a well supported
and worthwhile sale for both sheep and cattle for the first attempt.
