Ian Britcliffe getting Ian Scoth- ern to edge one through to Mar tin Peel with the last ball of the first over. A stand of 55 between Mick

Scothern and Luke Hodgson took 21 overs as Britcliffe and Shahid Nawaz bowled tightly, backed-iip by some good fielding and Craig Hall broke the part nership with a good throw to Peel

Kulatunga to the crease and he immediately went on the attack. Tom O’Neill came on and this

paid o ff as he took a simple return catch to dismiss Scothern for 38 and then he had the pro well caught by Kerr in the deep at 86-4.

Nawaz trapped Pickup in front

for a duck and the pro had 1-14 off 14 overs!

The batsmen then had to

attack O’Neill and even though runs were scored he continued to take wickets trapping Hall leg before bowling Lord and having Khan caught by Craig Hall to grab his first five-wicket haul for Ribblesdale.

Nawaz had Sheraz leg-before

in the 44th over but they failed to take the vital last wicket although Marsh almost caught Plant in the last over. Ryan Gladwin and Craig Hall

opened in reply and put on 66 in 22 overs with the youngsters in attacking mood whilst Hall played a gritty anchor role. Gladwin went for 44, trapped

in front by Lord, when he seemed to have a certain half-century in his hands. Alastair Marsh smashed the

first ball he received for six and raced to 23 before he too went

leg-before to Stead, Martin. Peel kept up the rate with 19 but fell to a catch behind with Ribbles dale requiring just 5 to win. Nawaz joined Hall but it was

fitting that the opener scored the winning runs, he showed great patience in his knock and

remained unruffled despite adverse comments he received while at the crease.

Edenfield and came away with the seven points. The home side won the toss

Ribblesdale then went to

and elected to bat on a good look ing track but lost Roscoe caught behind by Peel off Britcliffe in the second over. This brought the in-form

Mitchell to the crease and he put on 76 with Smithson in 18 overs but the introduction of David Howard to the bowling attack turned the game in Wanderers’ favour.

He bowled Mitchell for 25 and had Smithson leg before for 45

but Edenfield were still in a good position, 92-3 at the half-way stage. Howard bowled beautifully

moving the ball off the seam towards four slips and a gully fielder all waiting for the catch. Dean Braithwaite duly oblig

ed, Hudson the batsman for 12 at 109-4 and Brett Storey was trapped in front three balls later. Stephen Kerr was brought into

the attack as Terry Braithwaite went for wickets and the spinner paid off as he bowled Holt for 15. David Howard continued to

take wickets, Craig Hall and Nawaz taking slip catches to remove Riley and Hanson, Kerr had Smith caught by Dean Braithwaite and it was fitting that Howard claimed the last wicket having Lewis caught by Britcliffe, his final figures were 7- 27 in 12.3 overs and his first two had gone for 121 Ribblesdale got off to a steady start in reply, Gladwin and Hall

put on 35 before the latter was caught at slip by Mitchell off Storey and the pro produced an even better catch to remove his opposite number. Peel went for a duck and Rib

blesdale were struggling at 53-3, Howard joined Gladwin and looked in excellent touch but fell to an absolute stunning catch by Mitchell off his own bowling for 17.

Dean Braithwaite sacrificed

his own wicket in a mix-up with Gladwin, Andy King helped steady the ship but Kerr really swung the game in Ribblesdale’s favour with a quickfire 25 off 24 balls. Gladwin reached his second half-century of the season and Tom O’Neill saw his side through to seven points, an innings of great maturity by the 17-year- old.

The last game of the season is against Settle at Church Mead

ow on Saturday starting at 1-30 p.m.

Bizarre twist in derby!

A B IZA R R E incident between David O’Neill and Mark Whelan ulti mately handed Clitheroe v ic to ry at Whailey on Saturday. Before coming on to

bowl what would have been his 10 th over, a flare

up with his skipper saw ‘Onion’ walk off the pitch, and refuse to play any fur ther part. And that left Clitheroe

with only nine wickets to find in the second innings, in a match they won by just 12 runs. After Clitheroe had been inserted into bat,

Neil Bolton’s side suffered the worst possible start after paid man Mark Gillespie was out for a duck in the first over. That brought Mark Bolton, to the crease to

partner namesake Neil, as the pair set about repair ing the early damage. The Chatburn Road

captain made 19 before he returned a Simon Gorton delivery, while Simon Coulter made no signifi cant impact and was caught by Whelan off pro fessional Neil Cordingley for three. A hamstring injury

Another massive victory for runaway champions Salesbury

FIRST Division champions Sales bury maintained their excellent end of season form with a massive 192- run win over Earby. The locals lost just five wickets

in compiling a huge total of 266, before the vsitors were skittled for just 74 in reply. Clitheroe closed the gap on

third-placed Burnley Belvedere, with a win against the same oppo nents at Chatbum Road.

With Belvedere batting first, the

home side managed to restrict the total to just 151-9, before overhaul ing that with seven wickets in hand. Another high-scoring afternoon

saw Ribblesdale Wanderers claim a home win against Burnley GSOB. -The Church Meadow outfit col

lected seven points, after bowling their visitors out for 151 in reply to their first innings total of 215-8.

In the Second Division, Read

guaranteed the runners-up spot behind Stacksteads after an 89-run against Settle.

The visitors were bowled out for

135 after the Whailey Road outfit had registered 224-6 in their first innings. ■ There were also victories for

Salesbury and Whailey, who won at Burnley GSOB and Burnley Belvedere respectively.

In a low-scoring match at

Ilabergham, Salesbury claimed a six-wicket win after initially restricting the hosts to 94-9. But Whalley’s task proved much

harder, as they had just two wick ets remaining before eventually overhauling Belvedere’s total of 132-6. With the Third Division title

still up for grabs, a number of local sides are in with a shot.

Read boosted their credentials

with a landslide 10-wicket win at Belvedere, after bowling out their hosts for 135. Clitheroe skittled Bamoldswick

for 69 after posting 210, while Rib blesdale Wanderers bowled out visi tors Earby for 145 in reply to 241-7. Salesbury also picked up the

maximum points haul, aftet Bax- enden were shot out for 108 chasing 150.

midway through the innings to Mark Bolton resulted in him batting with a runner, and after Matthew Coulter had fallen'for a single, Bolton became Cordingley’s third

victim for a hard-fought 39. ' The remainder of the

Clitheroe innings seemed to fade away, as they ended on 129-9 against the Station Road strug gles. In a mirror of the first

innings, a wicket was col lected straightaway in reply, as Mark Harg reaves trapped Martin Davies lbw for no score. Lee Kearsley made six

before he fell to Gillespie, before Cordingley made

his way back to the pavil ion for just 12. The' extra man for

Clitheroe would pay divi dends, with O’Neill now watching from the side lines. With Whailey seeming

ly cruising to vic to ry - needing 32 off the final 10 overs — Clitheroe’s chances of a Lancashire Cup spot seemed to be dwindling. But a miraculous spell

of bowling from Andrew Ainsworth and Gillespie saw the hosts skittled for 117, to hand the visitors the full seven points.

Whailey were out to

make amends, and did so in fine style with victory over Barnoldswick on Sunday. In what was to be a close game, the home side

won the toss and elected to put Davies and Cord ingley in to bat. The pair got off to the worst possible start when

Barnoldswick paid man Jeevantha Kulatunga bowled out his opposite numer for just three runs in the second over. Davies continued with

Kearsley, with the pair adding 42 before the latter was caught by Matthew Plant in the 19th over off Kulatunga.

The bowling prowess of

the Barnoldswick paid man came into action again four overs later when he removed opener Davies (19) with the aid of Jon Pickup in the field. At this stage Whailey

were 49-3 and the intro duction of Mark Whelan to the crease was begin ning to reap rewards. Partnered with first

Alex Whelan (6), Andy Pratt (1) and finally Simon Gorton, the Whai ley skipper was the high est scorer on the day with 58 runs. He was eventually caught by Kulatunga off

Pickup but the damage had been done. Gorton continued to

put on 32 before being stumped by John Hall, as the late order of Jason Smith and Liam Burgess saw out the remaining overs to a total of 149.

In reply, Barnoldswick

lost Ian Scothem, again in the first over for a duck, saw Kulatunga caught out just five overs later by Neil Cordingley for just a single run, and then skip per Mick Scothern (10) bowled for Smith. But Barnoldswick ral

lied and through Pickup (55), Plant (26) and Hall, (39) came within touching distance of their Ribble Valley rivals. Liam Hodgson (7) and

Ben Charnley (3) added 10 vital runs but with Butt and Rawson both being dismissed for ducks, and Oldfield failing to score, Whailey were fortu nate enough to remove the late order with just two runs to spare. Clitheroe finish their

season with a home game against Blackburn North ern tomorrow and a win will hand them a place in the Lancashire Cup next season. Whailey are on their

travels as they meet Oswaldtwistle Immanuel.
