THE Whalley Abbey Fellowship’s open day on Sat urday proved an exceptionally successful event. Perfect weather was supplemented by an excellent public response. Interest in the abbey is on the

increase, due to the projected refurbishment scheme covering the next decade. Various stalls, a bouncy castle, refreshments and

other activities were well patronised, taking the total profit for the day to well over £2,000.

[E W h a l le v A b h e v E e l lo w s hm ’s n np n Hnv nn S n f_ T'Vinra t«; There was also entertainment from the Ossy dog

gers and people were able to look round the 75-place conference and 30-bedded residential facilities at the abbey, which have just benefited from a £37,000 refurbishment. Religious groups from a wide area use them, but they also cater for purely busi ness or recreational parties. “The fellowship has paid more than half the cost of the work, having built up its funds and supported

the abbey for tens of years. We are very grateful for the money and for the volunteer help members give,” says Abbey manager Mr John Wilson. The chairman of the abbey, the Rt Rev. John

Goddard, Bishop of Burnley, and the warden, the Rev. Chris Sterry, were among, the officials present to speak to visitors. The Bishop is pictured with some of the fellow ship’s officials. (K300803/5)

Water fluoridation is on the agenda

by Robbie Robinson

FLUORIDATION of water sup plies in the Ribble Valley is once more being debated. .The issue will be discussed by

Lancashire County Council before any decision is made to introduce the controversial process. The council is holding what it describes as its own in-depth probe, in

which a task group of councillors will interview health and water industry experts as well as seeking public opin ion. The debate is to ensure that the

council knows the pros and cons of flu oridation and what other options exist for dental health care and education. County Coun. Wendy Dwyer said: “Whab we expect is that we would be

asked our views before any introduc tion, so it is important we have a con sidered and educated view.” This view will have to consider con

flicting reports regarding the merits of adding fluoride to water supplies. Sup porters of the scheme say that the chemical will strengthen teeth, partic ularly the developing ones of children, and make them less susceptible to den tal caries. However, those opposing the plan have reports which allege that there is

no significant protection afforded by the process and that there is evidence of an increase in dental fluorosis (mot tled teeth), to the extent that some countries which adopted the scheme have now reversed their decision. They quote the National Pure

Water Association, which states that the additive will not be the naturally- occurring fluoride, which is found in

water and foods, but is hexafluorosili- cic acid, a chemical described as a toxic waste by-product of the phosphate fer tiliser industry. There is also strong ethical opposi

change to give extra legal protection to water companies that add fluoride to water.”

Care Trust (PCT) is not recommend ing fluoridation of water supplies, but at a meeting on December 19th, 2002, the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Pri mary Care Trust resolved that it “should express support for the intro duction of fluoridation of the water supply as a means of reducing the high levels of dental decay among children

“Controversial fluoridation could move one step nearer after a legislative

tion to what is seen by many as enforced medication. The county council has also stated:

Fight Against Fluoridation - Black burn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley, has requested this support be with drawn and has said that fluoridation should not proceed as scientists have stated that they could not discover any reliable, good-quality evidence in worldwide literature of the effective ness of fluoridation in reducing dental caries. She added that scientists had also

in the local population, particularly for children in deprived neighbourhoods”. Mrs Linda Forrest, chairman of

said that the evidence regarding effec tiveness of fluoridation in reducing inequalities in dental health across social groups was weak, contradictory and unreliable. Details of how people can make

their views known can be obtained from Debbie Franklyn at Lancashire County Council on 01772 532422.
