New apprentice plan will encourage teens to stay put

by Natalie Cox

TEENAGERS from the Ribble Valley could be encouraged to develop their careers locally if a new apprenticeship scheme gets

off the ground in Lancashire. A survey'of almost 1,500 people

across the county found tha t better job opportunities for those aged 18 to 25 would make them more hkely to stay and develop their careers in Lancashire. As.a result of the findings, Lan

cashire County Council is now consid ering developing its own apprentice

ship scheme to take on young workers up to the age of 18, as well as giving cash help to support those taken on by private firms. County Coun. Terry Burns said:

"Young people are telling us that bet te r job opportunities in the well- trained and hi-tech world of the future are what they are looking for to keep them in Lancashire. "These should not jus t be clerk-

type jobs - apprenticeships should include college training and we also need to have some graduates. /‘With 37,000 employees we can

have a big influence on giving good jobs to young people."

The research showed that 69,% of

those aged 18 to 25 said better job opportunities would make them more likely to stay and develop their careers inthecounty. ■

< ‘ Said Coun. Bums: 'This is why we

■will be looking a t the private sector too and are organising discussions between the Learning and Skills Council and county-owned Lan cashire County Development Ltd. 'We ha've a large aerospace sector in

Lancashire and that pays very well. “I met with aerospace employers

recently and they say , they want more local graduates, m there is good news oh the horizon.". A,• '
