Blues raring to go in battle for the title
By CRAIG SALMON
CLITHEROE will be looking to the heavens from now until Satur day hoping the weather
■ does not postpone their second game at Shaw-
/ bridge in five days. The Blues scheduled
fixture versus high-flyers Salford City on Tuesday night fell victim to heavy overnight rain. And manager Lee
Sculpher is hoping Satur day’s home fixture against
Glossop.North
. End does not go the same way.
“It will be nearly two weeks without a game by the time we get to Satur
day. “But the players will
be raring to go so we should be OK, I hope.” The Blues’ boss also
reacted with caution to news that Clitheroe have been drawn at home to derby rivals and North West Counties’ Second Division side Nelson in the second round of the FA Carlsberg Vase on Saturday, November
10th. He said: “lam pleased
with an home draw. But in a competition like the Vase, we probably prefer
pointing that the match- leagues was off as we were'look- ing to bounce back from
last week. “But there has been a
lot of rain and the reserves played on the pitch on Saturday. “Keith Lord has made
great strides to get the pitch fit but it just was
n’t right.” Sculpher is slightly
concerned that the Blues may struggle for match fitness when they next take to the field of play
He said: “It is disap- to play teams from other “Simply because of

the'experience point of view and playing some body different. “I wouldn’t say i t ’s a
bad draw for us but it’s a good draw for them. “They will come here
with nothing to lose. The pressure will be on our selves. Everyone will be expecting us to win.” There is, of course, the

extra added pressure on Clitheroe due to their proud tradition in recent
A SUBLIME piece of skill from Paul Cook got Burnley back on track on Tuesday night. After going five games without
a win, the Clarets moved to with in a point of the top after beating leaders Crystal Palace 1-0 at Turf
Moor. In a game of few chances, the
cultured Cook showed great inno vation to curl the ball into the top corner over Matt Clarke, after Lee Briscoe’s cross fell in the box
12 yards out. Palace boss Steve Bruce, in the
manner of his mentor Alex Fergu
son, felt it was a fluke. But that was just sour grapes. His winner at Barnet in the FA
Cup two seasons ago, from the left touchline, was a hopeful dink to the back post, but this was clearly
intentional. And Cook, who joins Ian
Moore, Glen Little) Lee Briscoe and Andy Payton, as joint top- scorer with four) will hope for more of the same against former club Wolves on Sunday (kick-off 3
p.m.). Wolves were deposed as table-
toppers at the weekend by Palace, who won 1-0 at Molineux to
stretch their run of victories too , , The second half saw Palace in seven, climbing above Dave Jones’
i
side on goal difference. But Palace's bid to equal an 80-
year-old club record of eight wins on the bounce came a cropper. Stan Tement, after the defen
sive malaise in the 3-3 home draw with Barnsley on Saturday, switched to a 3-5-2 formation, matching Palace. The Clarets looked consider
ably more solid at the back as they picked up only their fourth clean sheet of the season. In fact, neither keeper had a
shot to save. Palace were unfortunate to see
the talented Julian Gray's early angled shot hit the angle and fly oyer, before Cook's decisive blow. As referee Mark Clattenburg
began to lose the plot, making some mystifying decisions - most in favour of the visitors - the Eagles again went close when Clinton Morrison's snap shot flew wide of the near post.
. the ascendancy m terms of posses
sion, but the closest they came to an equaliser was five minutes from time when subs titute Steven Thomson snatched at a great opportunity and screwed the ball wide after Morrison's back heel opened up the Burnley defence. The Clarets now move on to
Molineux with a fit Glen Little, who had an eight-minute cameo against his former club on Tues
day. Graham Branch, despite play
ing 45 minutes in the reserves last week, might come into contention for the trip to Gillingham on Tuesday. Otherwise, only Alan Moore is
not available - the only player not in physical training at the club after his hernia operation. The Clarets' resources will be
stretched this weekend when they go on the road for two games in
three days. Wolves face derby rivals West

Brom at The Hawthorns tonight on ITV D igita l, and Burnley agreed to move their trip to Molineux to Sunday. However, they have been unable to move the game at Gillingham baacck 24 hours.

ROVERS again showed they have nothing to fear in the Premiership at Arsenal on Saturday. Hot on the heels of their
7-1 crushing, of West Ham, Graeme Souness' men provided more value for money at Highbury. And David Dunn, in
front of the watching Sven Goran Eriksson, laid fur ther claim for a full Eng land call-up with a deadly double. Again Souness pointed at his defensive shortcom
ings, with the imperious Patrick Vieira robbing him for the Gunners' third
goal. But Dunn's ability in
the final third had the media purring after the
game. His showed great tech
nique to fire Rovers level at 2-2, and terrific impro visation with his left foot for the last-gasp point
saver. The one "thing that
could keep Dunn out of England's forthcoming
World Cup warm-up pool since taking over against Sweden is the—from Peter Taylor, and U n d e r 21s'UEFA Euro- may well have new
pean Championship play off against Holland, which clashes with the full side's
friendly. ^However, games against
Holland and Italy follow, before final preparations are made for the finals in Japan and South Korea. So Dunn could yet get
his chance to impress. For the time being
though, he and his team mates will be more con cerned with maintaining their recent form. They may have slipped
to 11th in the table, but in a tight Premiership, they lie only three points behind Liverpool in fourth, although they have played more games. And Rovers will aim to
increase the gloom over rock-bottom Leicester when the Foxes visit Ewood Park on Monday, a clash televised by Sky Sports (kick-off 8 p.m.). Dave Bassett has
presided over defeats against Chelsea and Liver-
recruits on board. Nottingham Forest
have given permission for Bassett to speak to Chris Bart-Williarns, who is out of contract at the City Ground in the summer, and Forest cannot afford to offer him a new deal. Bassett is also interest
ed in Bart-Williams' team mate Alan Rogers, who is capable of playing any where down the left. Talking of left-sided
players, West Brom have allegedly turned down a £2m bid from Rovers for former Chelsea youngster
Neil Clement. Clement, player of the
year at The Hawthorns last season, has been a rev
elation, although Preston fans will remember his ill- fated loan spell at Deep
dale. His positional sense and
stylish play, allied with a no-nonsense manner, have made the 23-year-old, son of former QPR and Eng land full back Dave, a 1
years in the Vase. In the last five years,
the Blues have reached the final at Wembley in 1996 and then won through to last season’s semi-final where they were beaten by eventual winners Taunton Town
in an epic tie. Sculpher added:

cueist, a member of the Rishton Sharks, has won himself a place in the Tour’s top 100 ranked players. After finishing 82nd
this season, Steve is keen to improve his ranking further next season and finish in the top 64, which will enable him to claim professional status. Steve has thoroughly
enjoyed his first experi ence on the Tour, although he admits it has been a real eye opener. England captain Lee
Kendal was Steve’s first opponent in the opening event of the season and after lead ing 5-4, the Chatburn pool ace looked set for an unlikely win. How ever, Kendal reeled off three mistake-free frames to win the
match. The overall standard
wanted man. Capable, like Nils-Eric
Johansson, of playing at full back, centre back or left midfield, Clement is certainly the right age and can only get better. He would be a welcome
addition to a squad that is starting to look very impressive.
of the Tour was emphasised in the sec ond event when Steve drew David Arnold, who was ranked 34th on the Tour at the time. Arnold won 7-4 in an extremely competi tive match before going
on to reach the final. Steve picked up his
first ranking points of the season by defeating pro Karl Milner, before falling to Welsh inter national Craig Reynolds. His least successful
event of the year was at Blackpool when he was knocked out in the preliminary games. He bounced back strongly in August, though, col lecting £50 after his performances in the Club event which is contested by debut players on the tour. Steve then made his
television debut in the International Masters TV event before being taught a lesson by World Champion Chris Melling. In the last event of
the season, Steve trav elled to Brighton and picked up further rank ing points. He won his first match emphatical ly, going through 7-2, turning over profession al Gary Brown. He then narrowly
lost to Manchester’s Steve Munro who had won the Scottish Mas ters the previous week. Steve said: “The
overall standard of the Tour is outstanding, and has had a positive effect on my game. “I now know I can
beat the top players, and hopefully next sea son I can do so consis
tently.”
