IN 122AD, the Emperor Hadrian came to Britain and ordered the Roman Wall to be built. Th“ was the subject discussed by Mr Dudley Green at the Whalley and District History and Archaeology


Society on Thursday. The wall was intended to control movement on the fron­


tier and was originally planned partly in stone and partl> of turf to stretch from Newcastle to Bowncss on Solway It upgraded the previous line of forts on a Roman road


CaMarfvchangos took place during the building by Roman legionaries, forts were added along the course of the wall, and a great ditch, which is still visible in places to this day cordoned it off on the inside. The wall was also extendedH Wallsend. Mr Green illustrated each section of the wall,


much of which can be walked ujion today.
