You have to be pragmatic about buying a car (or the family. Much as you'd like something with tarmac-burning performance and enough gadgets to furnish a small electrical store, you know deep down that you re really going to end up with something a lot more practical and a lot less fun. After all, just look at today's motoring conditions and the expense and aggravation when things go wrong. It's best, surely, to err on the side of caution, particularly when what you're looking for is an affordable used family hatchback. Well, yes and no. For a start, family


thought prices were rising... The net result of all that ot course is that used prices have taken a severe bashing. Instead of the three or tour-year old family hatch you


were expecting to haggle for, you could find y o u r s e l f b e h in d

An unusual choice to start with - Mazda s323. Examples of the recently replaced model are

To refresh your memory, this was - and still is - the only family hatch you could buy with pop­ up headlamps. Only ever available in the UK with two engines and one body style, it was bouqht mainly as a second car. The importers tried to turn it into a GTi competitor with the introduction of the 1.8-litre GT in 1991, but buyers shunned this version in favour ot the more sedately performing 1.6-litre models.


For the earlier shape, you can pay anything up to about £2,400. though you'd be better steering clear of cars at either end of that ranqe. If you can find one of the 1989 models, it may be a bit tatty. Better to seek out something like an H-reg GTi. Expect to pay £


A well-equipped 91H Executive SE will also set you back a mere £2,500. Later L-reg cars go for about £3.500. depending on spec. The newer-shape cars (without the pop-up lights but with an even more avant-garde shape) vary between £3,000 and £9.500, with the 2.0-litre V6 the most expensive. A 1997 V6 P-plater can be yours for £8,000 in fact. 98R-Plate examples start at about £9,000. The 1 8s range from £4,000 to £8.5400. Pay around £5.500 for an 1996 N-plated GLX.
