Spanish red is a delight
A COUPLE of new discoveries we have recently taken delivery of are two full-bod ied red wines from opposite
sides of Spain. The f irs t is from
Toro th e w e s te rn
most of the "denominacio d'origens, tucked up against the Portuguese bor
der on the river Douro. The 1997 VEGA SAUCO CRIANZA
a t Cl.99 from a family run bodega in Morales de Toro with 25 hectares of their own vines, plus some fruit from contracted growers, is made from Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto de Toro. Some of the vineyards in the DO are
around 100 years old and, owing to the region being neglected for most of the cen tury, a great many are over 50-years-old, leading to wines like this one with great colour, s t ru c tu re and d ep th of f ru it enhanced with a year in oak casks. My second recommendation comes from the other side of Spain, close to
Barcelona. P iorato is one of C a ta lo n ia 's most
ancient wine-making regions. It has a spectacular mountain terrain and individual styles of wine make it
unique in Spain. The 1999 ONIX at £5.99, is produced
by the VINICOLA DEL PRIORAT - a central facility established in 1991 to cen tralise the efforts of the individual village co-operatives in Priorat. The blend of Onix reflects a selection of
fruit from some of the older Garnacha vineyards, many between 80 to 100-years- old. These low-producing old vines pro duce this wine which has big, rich concen trated fruit flavours. Both wines are ideal with rich stews or
grilled meats. O Andrew Byrne is a partner in Byrne’s

w ith Angela Magoylas, of Blue Sea Restaurant, Lourdata, Kefalonia
LOURDATA, is a picturesque village in the south of Kefalonia, surrounded by olive trees, aged plane trees, lemon and orange
groves. The village is named after the British
lords, who, during the British occupancy in the 19th Century, built their country hous
es on the hillside. The mild climate and the ample moun
tain water are favourable to agriculture and Lourdata has always been, and still is, the main vegetable producer for Kefalonia, growing many kinds of fruits and vegeta
bles. The open air Blue Sea Restaurant and
Fish Tavema is situated in the most idyllic place, overlooking the turquoise and blue Ionian Sea. Tables and chairs placed on a vine covered patio, have a backdrop of the brightest pink bougainvillaea. The tavema, where we often had lunch, is just a short ,-alk away, along the beach, from our holi
day apartment, also owned by Angela and her husband, Dennis..

home-made bread that was brought to our table, to the live Italian music and choice of tiramisu as one of many tempting desserts on offer, our Wednesday night out at the Bethes- da Street eatery had all the ingredi ents necessary for an enjoyable Euro-

the various menus - the Italian night special at £9.95 per head for four courses, the specials board with a variety of fish dishes and the restau rant's substantial main menu - we munched our way through a garlic bread cooked to our liking with half cheese and half tomato. the meat mixture, followed by another layer of cheese. Place another layer of aubergines on top. Thinly slice the toma toes and arrange on top, cover with grat

and cook for approximately 45 minutes. 7. In the meantime, make a white sauce
with the milk, flour and butter, when it has thickened add two beaten eggs and a little cinnamon, salt and pepper. 8. Pour sauce over the meat mixture with
a li tt le more grated cheese on top and return to oven until i t is a rich golden
colour. My tip: I used a tin of tomatoes added to
the sauteed meat and cooked on top of the oven for 30 minutes, until thickened, then layered the potatoes, aubergines, meat and cheese in the same way as above. 1 poured over the white sauce, then cooked in the oven for about 40 minutes.

THIS is an exquisite double bill of theatri
cal makebelieve. Sheridan's "The Critic" made me laugh
till the tears rolled down my face. Adam Godley as the central character,
Mr Puff, is wonderfully supported by a superb team of actors taking on a range of comic parts in the play within a play. Puff, the original PR/ad exec and spin
doctor gives a very clever account of all the different ways he has publicised his clients with tricks that OK and Hello! would envy.

A DOUBLE BILL OF THEATRE MIRTH
He has also had a successful career as beg ging letter writer and "benefit fraudster , but now he wants to be a playwright and invites two critics to witness the rehearsal of his tragedy - The Spanish Armada - and thus we get his interruptions and tne appalled comments of the critics as we watch this dreadfully bad, but hilariously funnv play. The Exchange designers have excelled themselves again and the costumes
were a treat. The first half play, "The Dispute by
Pierre Marivaux, is an intriguing comedy in which an aristocratic pair watch an experiment where three men and three women, brought up in isolation, meet for the first time, the purpose being to see it men and women are more liable to mfideli- tv! It reminded me a little of "Midsummer Night’s Dream" where the young lovers are tormented by the tricks of the fairies. The results are interesting, but you will have to
see for yourself!
