Y anyone's standards, the little 2 0 6 has proved
to be a huge success for Peugeot. It is the top-sell- ing retail car in the UK and over one million have now been sold around the
globe. With five worldwide
plants busy churning out more, another 700,000 examples will be pounding the roads by this time next year. Even so, despite so much customer interest, Peu
geot has still had to tighten its belt in an increasingly competitive market and be seen to offer more for less. Hence the introduction of special edition Look models across the line-up, all with standard air conditioning (or a sunroof) for less than the price of the LX models on which they are based. Which means that the
entry-level three-door 1.1- litre petrol-powered Look variant costs a reasonable
£8,795 (as opposed to £9,125 for the standard LX
model). There is also the option of three other power plants (a petrol 1.4 from £9,195 and two diesels, a normally aspirated 1.9 from £9,595 and a turbocharged 2.0HDi from £10,645). As well as air condition
ing, all of these cars get the usual LX bits and pieces, which include power steer ing, a driver's airbag, remote central locking, elec-

ple carrier, they cannot quite cope with the idea of actually
A
owning one. What they actually buy is usual
ly a conventional five-door family hatchback. So what if someone made one of those, but gave it a dash of 4x4 chunkiness and a slice of MPV versatility? Sounds like a good idea doesn’t it? Enter the
Suzuki Ignis. Suzuki say the Ignis is an entirely
new type of car, but then we have heard tha t before have we not? They call it a multi-compact, but you will prefer to think of it as a slightly more versatile spin on the conventional family hatch back recipe. Although very slightly narrower than your average Astra or Focus, it is significantly taller and looks a good bit more practical. This approach is already a well-trod
den path by other Japanese makers. ^ Mitsubishi’s Colt Space Star, Mazda s Demio and Toyota’s Yaris Verso all aim to offer a similar package of virtues. None however, can get anywhere near the kind of prices th a t Suzuki is asking for the Ignis. Three-door variants begin at iust £6,995 for the entry-level three- door GA and £7,995 for the three-door GL, rising to £8,750 for the range-top ping five-door GL, also offered in auto
matic form. The word Ignis is derived from the . ,,
Latin for fire, not that you will be expecting too much of tha t from under the bonnet. In which case, you might

be in for something of a pleasant sur prise. Suzuki has developed an all-new aluminium 16-valve 1.3-litre four-cylin der petrol unit for this car and feels so pleased with it tha t no other engine
options are being offered. Output is a decent 83 b.h.p. and,
thanks to low gearing and a light 945kg weight, the car moves along at a very reasonable pace, although top speed is a
mediocre 99 m.p.h. Of far more relevance, of course, in
this sector of the market is fuel con sumption and here the Ignis really shines. Expect about 33 m.p.g. around town, about 44 m.p.g. in normal mixed use and nearly 55 m.p.g. on the motor- , way - figures normally reserved for diesel-powered rivals. Not tha t you will want to do too
much motorway travel in this Suzuki: the tall shape and the high-set 4x4- style seating position make it more
suited to urban use. The fact th a t the Ignis sits higher oft
the ground than all its rivals has a number of useful benefits apart from giving it th a t chunkier look. With a minimum of 6.5 inches (165mm) between the ground and the under neath of the car, traversing unmade roads and encountering everyday haz ards like speed humps and roadworks
create no problem. You will also find the back easier to
load and the side-pillar-mounted tail light clusters are easier for following motorists to see in an emergency.

to early owners, who struggled with the feeble L-Series 1.9-litre Rover diesel, so they should probably try it. The new 2.0- litre 16v turbocharged direct injection Td4 unit uses state-of-the-art common rail diesel technology to offer impressive improvements in performance, economy and refinement. With 112 b.h.p. on tap, owners can expect a 15% increase in power and a 25% increase in torque over,
the old model. As a result, this will be the Freelander
that most customers are likely to choose, Qinpp it offers the best combination of
