MP’s rallying call for the survival of rural post offices

THE rural post office and its demise has been raised by Nigel Evans,

Ribble Valley MP. Mr Evans outlined his

fears during a reading of the Postal Services Bill in the House of Commons and highlighted the issue th a t if the Government continued with its present policy of withdrawing vital services, more clo sures will be imminent. Mr Evans said: "This

Government, in its ill- thought-through legisla tion, is putting at risk the survival of our rural post

offices. "If Mr Blair and his Gov

ernment insist on people's benefits and pensions being paid s traig h t into their bank then post offices will

death for committing forgery A FARM labourer claimed that the death of his girlfriend led to him altering a pay cheque given to him by Clitheroe farmer John Roberts,

from £24 to £34. Blackburn magistrates heard that Ben

Fothergill (19), of Double Stones Farm, Silsden, was then paid in cash when he said there was a problem with the cheque, but failed to notify Mr Roberts when the cheque was re-presented. Fothergill pleaded guilty to forgery and theft of £34 and was fined £100 with £34

compensation and £70 costs. Wendy Shackleton (prosecuting) said Mr Roberts, of Siddows Farm, Clitheroe,

had paid Fothergill for work, and when he reported a problem with the cheque had

agreed to pay him in cash. Miss Shackleton said: "The defendant

collected his cash, but did not return the cheque which had been presented to his father's bank account. The cheque for £34

eventually cleared." Frank Smith (defending) said that at the

time of the offence Fothergill had not been thinking straight because his girlfriend had died in a road accident near Skipton. Mr Smith said: "He has worked for Mr

Roberts before and since this incident when he was paid by cheque and there was no problem. He can think of no reason why he altered the cheque on this occasion."

Tea and chat volunteers wanted

VOLUNTEERS willing to drop round for a cuppa and a ch a t are being

sought. Anxious that some older

people are becoming increasingly isolated and lonely, Clitheroe's branch of Age Concern is seeking sup port from anyone with a spare hour or two a week to befriend and visit an older member of the community. Said a spokesman: "Poor

mobility and no family in the area due to demograph ic changes are just two rea sons an elderly person can become isolated. Prolonged isolation can have a devas tating effect on an individ ual, including mental and physical health problems." For further information

on the charity's "Caring Neighbourhood Scheme", telephone Heather Johnson on 01200 425654 or call into its Moor Lane shop.

organised by "Music for Youth" as a Millennium Commission Lottery pro ject. The patrons include Christopher Bruce CBE, Christopher Dean MBE,

Sir Peter Wright CBE and Wayne

seven groups selected for the regional final out of hundreds of entries. The dance is called "Country-Cide"

and is based on the idea that the local countryside is suffering and gradual ly being irreversibly defrayed. The choreography is by Miss

Andrea Yates, the girls’ dance teacher. Group members are Debbie Banks

undoubtedly lose much of their business. We have already witnessed post office closures in the Ribble

Valley." Mr Evans went on to say

th a t the legislation will affect those who rely on the post office on a day-to-day

basis. Pensioners will be most

hard hit in areas where cash machines are not available. The MP is suggesting a

redrafting of the bill to pro tect the rural way of life and measures which will ensure that the rural post office does not close. He said: "The post office

is one of the last remaining bastions of the countryside and if we want to protect the fabric of our country side then we must ensure its survival."
