A CHAIN of events has left staff and pupils at one Ribble Valley school feeling flushed with success. Over the past month, more than a

penny has been spent updating the toilet facilities at Waddington and West Bradford CE Primary School. The task of officially lifting the lid

church, together with parents and governors, have been raising money to help pay for the major work needed to

children in classes two and three. Five weeks ago, work on the £14,000 mod ernisation project got under way due, in part, to their fund-raising efforts, but also as a result of money from the Department for Education and Employment. Our photograph shows Mr Pollard

with his son, Steven, cutting the rib bon, watched by school pupils and

one December morning, her husband left home for the school he loved and was "stabbed through the heart by a young man who did not know the meaning of heart.” She said some people had

described her husband as a hero. He was'a modest man and believed there was a hero in everyone, and told the youngsters "to look for the hero inside yourself". The skatepark was just

when the Clitheroe young sters realised th a t some young people were causing disruption in the town, they set about creating their own skatepark. Mrs Lawrence had decid

skatepark co-ordinator, and five other young people received the Philip Lawrence Award from Home Secretary Jack Straw. She felt there should be a

the skatepark opened, juve nile crime has fallen in the town by 30 percent. Young people, supervised by youth workers from the Activate drugs awareness group based at the Trinity Centro have worked on the design and layout of the park and have also raised much of the cash for the £28,000 scheme. Fancy dress helps boost alliance funds

A FANCY dress party on a "Stars of the ’80s” theme raised £500 to help

support rural issues. The event was at Downham Village

Hall and was organised by the Mid- Pennine Action Group of the Coun tryside Alliance. Local band Beau Daisies provided

the music and that and an excellent two-course meal were enjoyed by many characters from the Flintstoncs to the J. R. Ewings. Numerous Ribble Valley personali ties were behind the get-ups, and raf

fle prizewinners included Nigel East- wood, Nicki Ilopwood, the Hon. and Mrs Ralph Assheton, Mr Chris Ilind- ley, Miss Angela Moyle, Mr and Mrs D. Farrimond and Mrs Phillippa

Me Fall. Group chairman Amanda Ander

son said: "The party was a great suc cess and the money raised will help fund other events planned for the coming months, as well as provide a donation to the alliance's funds. "I am sure there are many more people in the area who value their

rural way of life and would like to be kept informed about developments that may adversely affect it. Within our group we have members who are concerned by the break-up of village life, the unjustified burden on farmers, the building of houses on green land and conservation and environmental

issues." Inquiries about the group can be

War veteran whose medals were stolen, but replaced by RBL, dies at 91

A WAR veteran whose medals were stolen and then replaced by the Chatburn branch

of the Royal British Legion has died at the

age of 91. Mr Harry Ainsworth spent his final

years at Manor House, Chatburn, and was delighted last year when he received

replacement medals. Visually impaired, but a keen listener to

the Ribble Valley Talking Newspaper, Mr Ainsworth had given up hope of ever find ing replacements for the campaign medals collected in his years of service for King and country over the course of World War II. However, staff at the Chatburn home intervened and a lengthy hunt to replace the medals began, led by Mrs Alice Keny

on.

Mr Ainsworth served originally in the Lancashire Fusiliers Territorial Army

reserves, then was transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps, after which he was post

ed overseas to the Middle East until August, 1943, from when he went to North Africa. During his service, he was a tank driver and gunner in the Royal Tank Regi ment and was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the African Star, the Italy Star and the

prestigious War Medal of 1939-1945. With all the details pieced together,

members of the Royal British Legion pur chased replacement medals for Mr Ainsworth, which were presented to him at a special ceremony at the home of the vil lage Legion president, Mr Colin Wiseman,

last year. In a fitting final tribute, the medals were

placed upon Mr Ainsworth's coffin at the funeral service, which was followed by cre mation at Accrington on Tuesday.

Early-morning fire causes .major damage at hotel

A FRIGHTENING early morning tire caused many th o u san d s of pounds worth of damage to the Gibbon Bridge

Hotel, Chipping. A relatively new annexe to the main

building was involved, and the flames spread fast after the alarm went off at 12-

45 a.m. on Friday. "It started in a passageway and spread

to one of the best bedrooms we have," said proprietor Miss Janet Simpson. "Soon it was through the roof. There was nothing

we could do about it." The fire damaged a second bedroom and

several others were badly affected. There were only two people anywhere

near the outbreak, and they moved else where as a safety precaution. Fire-fighters from Longridge and Ful-

wood quickly had the outbreak under con trol, but damping down and similar work took many hours. Crews from Clitheroe, Preston and Garstang provided back-up. M iss Simpson said that an electrical

fault had been identified as the cause of the fire. It meant that some bookings had to be cancelled, but the function areas of the complex were not affected. It is hoped that repairs can be completed

within a few weeks, and certainly in time for the summer season. The hotel has won many awards and is determined not to allow the fire to affect its reputation or

operations. "We are very grateful to the fire service

and everyone who has helped," said Miss Simpson.

redrain the troublesome middle section of the pitch in the close season, while 120 seats will be fitted in the Frank Walker Memori al Stand to bring the num ber of seats at the ground to the required 400.

Anonymous cupid is

unmasked!

ROMANTIC husband Michael Scriven (33)

was quickly unmasked as Clitheroe's Valentine

Cupid. His wife Julie, who works

for Calderstones NIIS Trust looking after commu nity residents, received the dozen red roses offered by Barker's nurseries to the subject of an "I love you, Julie" message. As the Clitheroe Adver

tiser and Times reported last week, it was written in gold spray paint on the large red heart put outside the nursery premises in the run-up to Valentine's Day. Mr Scriven, a builder spe

cialising in conservatories, used the paint knowing it came off easily. In fact, his firs t two efforts were washed off by the rain, so he made a third clandestine visit. "I wanted to tell my wife

I loved her, and she was very surprised when I showed her the message," says Mr Scriven, a well- known local footballer. "The heart was there last year and I nearly did it then, but bottled out a t the last minute. I t was very nice of the nursery to offer the flowers and added romance to the occasion." The couple, who have two

children, live in Cringle Way, Clitheroe. Mr Scriven is goalkeeper for the Brown Cow FC and is also assis tant manager of Clitheroe Wolves Under-11 Blues.
