P r ic e c u t s on th e S k o d a F e l ic ia SKODA has started the countdown to
the death of Felicia by dropping
prices and restructuring the line-up. Felicia will eventually be replaced by
Fabia - a larger and classier supermini, which goes on sale on March 3rd. But five Felicia models will continue to be available until the end of the year. The entry level model, the Felicia Pnrnilar. now costs £6.200, down from
and radio/cassette player. The new Felicia line-up consists of
three hatchbacks and two estates. Top of the shop is now a Felicia Classic 1.9 diesel estate at £8,700. Previously that model tipped the scales at £10,300.

EW cars come along all the time, but new types of car are still
£7,000. But despite the price reduction, the 1.3 litre five-door version retains an engine immobiliser, five-speed gearbox
rare. Renault’s Scenic RX4 is rarer
still - it is the world’s first four- wheel drive compact MPV - yet
it is all so familiar. Given the popularity of 4x4s like
the Freelander and RAV4, and the sales-winning versatility of the Scenic, it was probably inevitable that such an innovative company as Renault would be the first to combine the two. There are some attempts to
make it look more brutish and imposing, but strip away the addi tional protective body plastic and what you have is a well-equipped version of the standard Scenic that now adorns so many family drive ways up and down the land. The spare wheel is carried, in
true 4x4 style, on the rear door. As the conventional Scenic is a hatch back, it was clear there had to be some alterations to the back end. So the RX4 has a door with a side hinge that opens in two stages. First the rear window is lifted up, allowing the metal part to swing. Happily, the end result is that

power does not sound powerful, but coupled with 155 lb ft of torque it gives excellent performance and 45 to

there is no harm done to the Scenic’s inspired versatility. This will be RX4’s unique selling
50 miles a gallon. Indeed, Volkswa gen quotes a combined figure of 56.5
attraction over rivals like Honda’s IIR-V and and that trendsetting Freelander. Inside, there are 20 different
storage areas, a huge boot and five individual seats that fold, slide, convert into tables and come out if necessary if you want to transform the cabin into an estate. The cabin floor is entirely flat aiding comfort and practicality.
A — - u’ Ride height is greater, taking the
eyeline of passengers to about the same level as in smaller jeep-style vehicles like the Suzuki Vitara. New, larger 16 in. wheels help it get taller and they add to the macho appearance too. But while the outside is more
aggressive, the cabin sticks to the script that has won Scenic so much
praise. The fascia is unchanged and
equipment in the two available trim levels puts even large, expen sive off-roaders to shame. Apart from the drinks cooler,
bottle holders behind the seats and seat back tables, there is air condi tioning, a CD player, seven-func tion trip computer and, on the top rated Monaco, full leather uphol
stery. All the safety features that have
won Scenic awards are retained:
front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic assistance and traction control. So who will buy this new, tougher, Scenic? It won’t be farm ers or anyone who actively seeks the delights of in-car mountain climbing, that’s for sure. But RX4 will make a great deal
of sense for families thinking of buying something like a Free lander. Permanent four-wheel drive is a huge safety boon for those wor ried about winter. And after trekking over boulder strewn crevices in it 1 can say its 4x4 cre dentials should not be dismissed as lightweight. 11 delivers a wonderful ride and excellent roadholding on tarmac. Pot holes are dismissed with barely a shrug of its Gallic shoulders and on loose, slippy surfaces it is as sure footed as a mountain goat.
And it is tough too, with the
ability to cope with far more than is likely to be asked of it by most owners. The nature of its 4x4 system -
fully automatic via a viscous cou pling - means it only works when it has to, so most of the time it is fair ly light on the gas. The 140 b.h.p. 2,0 16v version -
which hits 60 m.p.h. in 11 seconds and has a top speed of 112 m.p.h. - musters a creditable average of 30
m.p.g. Its partner engine, an all new 1.9
litre common rail diesel, managers a 38.4 m.p.g. average, beating its major off-roader rivals. RX4 does not go on sale until
June, but Renault has already revealed its price. The 1.9 dCl Sport Alize will cost £18,200 and the most expensive, the Monaco 2.0, will be £19,600.

t h e r i s e THE big guns dominated
new car sales in Janu
ary/ with Ford and Vaux- hall occupying seven out of the top TO places in the best sellers chart. Ford's Focus started the
new millennium as it ended the old one, sitting pretty as a clear leader as Britain's best selling
car. It chalked up more
than 10,000 sales in Jan uary, 1,500 clear of its nearest rival, the Ford Fiesta.
Mondeo and Ka joined _ #
Focus and Fiesta in the top 10 and Vauxhall's Corsa, Astra and Vectra continued to sell well, helping Vauxhall to post a 20 per cent rise in sales over the previous Janu
ary. The other top 10 places
went to French manufac turers, with the Peugeot 206, and Renault Megane and Clio con firming their places among the nation's favourites. January's total sales
performance was up 1.8
per cent on 1999 and Christopher Macgowan, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manu facturers and Traders said it was a great start to the year considering the pressures on the trade. "Despite wholly inac
curate speculation that car prices will fall dra matically this year, new car buyers are back in the market and Janu ary's figures reflect a' surge of interest now that the new millennium has begun."
