excellent form in recent meetings for Hyndburn have seen them elevated

r o t h e r an d s is ter Mark and Anna Griff iths

to the Red Rose squad. In January, Anna, who

attends Westholme school in Blackburn, won the Under 13 girls’ two-, four- and six-lap races for maxi mum points, while Mark, a Stonyliurst pupil, won the Under 15 boys’ two- lap race and shot putt, and was second in the triple jump. Anna repeated her feat

in the February meeting, while Mark won the two-

and four-lap races, and was runner-up in the shot. Anna has also been in

form on different terrain in the Blackburn and Dar- wen Schools’ Year 7 Cross- Country event, which she won. She added 28th place in

the Lancashire Schools Under 15 event, out of 113 competitors - finishing as the fifth-placed Year 7 runner in the county. (220200/5/1)

rivals Vauxhal! Motors and Newcastle Town were doing battle in the League Chal lenge Cup - in a game that went to extra-time - and Steve Parry's men took the opportunity to put more points on the board. They bossed the game

comfortable they were in

the game. Parry's side took the

game by the scruff of the neck, and coped easily with what the home side threw at them. They scored the all-impor

tant goal after only 13 min utes when Horsfield claimed his first strike in blue and white, beating the off-side trap before slipping the ball past the despairing keeper. Defeat looked unlikely

against the strugglers, but couldn't add to their soli tary goal, from debutant striker Martin Horsfield, who arrived last week from Uni Bond First Division rel egation candidates Gretna. The Blues made harder

work of winning than they might have done, with the th re a t of an equaliser always there no matter how

after th a t, but Clitheroe had to guard against an equaliser. However, they were the

more likely to score, and Dennis Hill was unlucky to see a shot hit the woodwork. However, the only impor

Good run continues as Clitheroe win again

Clilheroe 17 Blackburn 3rds 8 CLITHEROE RUFC’S good form con

tinued as they recorded their second dou ble of the season with a well-earned vic tory over Blackburn in a sea of mud at

Littlemoor. The home side settled the quicker, with the

Clitheroe forwards getting the better of things in the opening exchanges. Well lead by skip per Roger Holmes, props Harry Proctor and Andrew Thornber and hooker Mike Wilyman responded well, the Maroon and Golds advancing down pitch and won a five-metre scrum. From the ensuing play, stand-in No. 8 Holmes touched down as the Blackburn scrum retreated over their own line. The lead was quickly stretched to 12 points

inches short of the line on the first occasion and the soap-like ball to defeat him on the sec

ond. The second period was a war of attrition.

Clitheroe began to rely on their bigger for wards to make ground with lock Gary Sut cliffe and flankers Nuttall and Calton to the

fore. Blackburn dragged themselves back into

the game with a penalty and a try to make the score 12-8, but then Clitheroe scored the

best and decisive try of the game. Heanan made a half break before slipping

as full-back Jermaine Bernard claimed his sec ond try in as many matches following good work by wingman Brian Wood. Scrum half Ileanan converted and Clitheroe looked in full

control. The conditions made handling more diffi

cult and meant that running rugby would be at a premium for the remainder of the game. With half-time approaching the home side

almost put the game beyond the reach of Blackburn as fly half Burrill poached a cou ple of interceptions only to he dragged down

a pass to the supporting Ian Ibbotson who blasted his way through three would be tack- lers to score an excellent try, leaving the final score at 17-8 in favour of the home side. Weekend Teams
