Gaelforce Dance; King . George’s Hall; Blackburn; March 14th

A hurricane of talent blowing its way to town

THE Irish dance spectacular storm ing the world "Gaelforce Dance", blows into Blackburn on Tuesday,

March 14th. A company of 36 dancers, musi

cians and singers tells the story of two brothers, one love, passion, jeal ousy, tragedy and triumph in a mind-blowing dance spectacular. If you enjoyed "Riverdance" and

Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance", then "Gaelforce Dance" will blow you away! With a mix of traditional and con

temporary Irish pieces, "Gaelforce" takes the audience to the edge of this ancient art foam, capturing the mys tical sounds, rhythms and dynamic dance movements that is the heart beat of the Irish musical culture.

concert The Real.Abba Gold; King.

{George’s Hall, Blackburn,: . February 25th

Looks are not everything, but the sound is all!

MAMA Mia, here they go again ... Bjorn, Benny, Frida and Agnetha look and sound-a-likes are a t it again, but this time they're in Black burn - and this time it's the Real

Abba Gold. The talented quartet are in town

to celebrate 25 years of Abba music with all the classics including "Waterloo", "Dancing Queen", "The Winner Takes It All", "Fernando", "Chiquitita" and "Super Trouper". Apart from the shiny white flares

and stark blue eye shadow, they don’t look anything like the real Abba - but they certainly sound like

them. And at the end of the night, you'll be thanking them for the music!

Don Dino’s; Whalley Road, Clitheroe

HAS wandering down a street in Italy ever led you to mull over that old say ing, mostly used by mothers as a warn ing, not to judge a book by its cover? For whether visiting a city or a village,

once away from the main tourist area, the facades of many buildings tend to look dusty, dark and run down, but just as you are about to question Italians' reputation for good taste and style, an invite indoors or a wrong turn into a normally shut-off courtyard is all that is generally needed to

restore your faith. You can therefore view a trip to

Clitheroe's Don Dino's Italian restaurant in much the same way. From the outside, it looks nothing special. It fronts busy Whal ley Road and window shutters make the place appear more closed than open, yet go inside and you step into a Mediterranean melee of colour and clamour. You are greeted by strains of Puccini and

ever-attentive waiters, all genuinely Italian and led by genial boss Mr Dino himself. Specialities are seafood dishes. When the

boast is of the freshest ingredients, a good test dish is calamari for when it is not quite as promised, it can be chewier and more stringy than the processed mozzarella used

in stuffed crust pizzas. However, at Don Dino's, the calamari

was wonderfully fresh and delicious so I decided to stick to a seafood theme and opted for penne mari- nara as my main course. My dining companion, who had started with a seafood salad, switched to polio alia cacciatora, a succulent chicken dish with a wine sauce of herbs, onions and mushrooms. To finish, we had tiramisu and coffee served with

SCALLOP SOUP WITH CHILLI AND CORIANDER

with David Chamley, of the Moorcock Inn, Waddington.

THE recipe this week is another from the bibulous fish feast I attended at the Moorcock Inn, Waddington. Head chef David Chamley, of Clitheroe, has been at

ly hard assisting David, who looked resplendent in his specially bought chef's trousers decorated with fish motifs. Both were applauded by the diners for their won

the outstanding dishes. Second chef Jason Milligan also had to work extreme

derful achievement. Even though it was a mammoth task, the evening was

the Moorcock for 13 years, and in that time has learned many culinary skills and finer points from proprietor Mrs Susan Fillary, whose dream this fish feast has been

for many years. David enjoys cooking all manner of food Irom the

work preparing for the feast lie found it a worthwhile challenge. Only the day before had he any idea what fish would be arriving, so he and Susan had to pour over their recipe portfolios to find suitable menus. Sauces had to be prepared and 15 different marinades were used to create

wine talk

with Andrew Byrne

MY recom men da ti on this week comes from Au s t r a l i a , from a winery called Mamre

Brook. The origins of

c.

the name date back to the

first settling of the Barossa Valley, when William Salter moved to his

pastoral property in 1844. He built a simple cottage from

local stone and named it Mamre Brook from a reference in the Book

of Genesis. The cottage was enhanced in size

and elegance as the Salters' wine company prospered and eventually became Mamre Brook House, set in a delightful English garden. Of the wines they produce we

stock two, a 1998 Chardonnay which is a rich full-bodied wine packed with ripe tropical f ru it flavours, and a red which is a blend, almost unique to Australia in 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz a t

£6.29. The excellent 1996 season has

produced an elegant wine with intense, berry flavours. Rich black currant fruit combined with soft tannin and well-balanced cedary oak before finishing dry and firm. This very well-balanced wine is

5. Finish by adding diced fish and cook for five min

cream and top with plucked coriander and scallop gar nish.

To serve: Pour soup into warm dishes, drizzle with

the perfect accompaniment with most roast meats, but goes particu larly well, with rich hearty casseroles and the white I would recommend to go with oily fish, such as herring. 0 Andrew Byrne is a partner is
