Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek in Wild Wild West. WILD WILD WEST
(Cert 12, 101 mins) Comedy/adventure. Will
Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek. It’s Will Smith in the sec
ond of what will prove an ongoing collaboration with his Men In Black director Barry Sonnenfeld. It's a chaotic combo of fantasy (Jules Verne style), buddy movie banter and CGI effects into a noisy sci-fi Western. And it was ritually panned by the critical fraternity on the atrical release. But maybe they were expecting another clever, faintly subversive pic ture like MiB. And maybe they all missed the point. Because this isn't really about the plot - it's about having fun. MY FAVOURITE FILM by Mike Murdoch
WHAT is your favourite film of all time? Uncle Buck
Why do you like it so much? I like it because
John Candy's portray al of a gentle giant who is not used to domes ticity, let alone children, getting to grips with life, loves, teenagers and the w a shin g, is down to earth.
When did you first see this film? When it firs t came
out. What
is your favourite part of
the film? When Uncle Buck is
summoned to school to hear how his niece is, at six, a "waster" by an old dried-up schoolmistress - he puts her in her place brilliantly.
Who is your favourite actor/actress? Difficult -
Bo.Derek in
"10" with that hairstyle, Julia Roberts or Harrison Ford as the rugged explorer in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

THE AVENGERS, Sky Premier, 8.00pm. In a time when everything from the Sixties and Seventies is to be revered, what could be trencher than The Avengers? Diana Rigg flouncing about in a skin-tight leather cat- suit, while Patrick Macnee plays the stereotypical Englishman with a twist. So you can forgive film-makers for wanting to remake this clas sic series when all of a sudden Sixties kitsch became Nineties cool. Starring Uma Thurman as Emma Peel and Ralph Fiennes as John Steed, the film tells the tale of the duo’s struggle with evil business man August de Wynter (Sean Connery), who is out to control the weather. If you’re looking for pure escapism, this movie will while away a couple of hours quite merrily.
