Summertime is fine - but it brings problems for policing

SUMMERTIME is officially here.

The days are getting longer and the evenings are lighter. Pity that the weather has not got the message yet. Unfortu nately, this time of year brings with it a whole new set of problems for the police.

Recently, we have had a number of sheep worry ing incidents reported to us by farmers and mem bers of the public. On one occasion, a dog had sav aged and killed four sheep and injured more, when allowed to run free in a field full of sheep and lambs.

More worrying was the fact that the owner was with the dog and had let it off the lead. We urge all dog owners to be extra care ful when exercising their animals in fields where there are livestock. Even if you are on a public right of way through a field in which there are sheep, your dog must be kept on a lead at all times.

The windscreen was smashed and the dash board completely wrecked. I t was dark when this happened and, although nobody was in the vehicle at the time, the consequences could - have been fatal.

First, a group of kids managed to pick up part of a broken gravestone and hurl it over the church wall on to a vehi cle below parked in St Mary's Street.

I t is worth remembering that you can be prosecut ed by the police if your dog worries sheep, and a farmer can shoot a dog that is worrying his ani mals.

YET again, we have been overrun with complaints regarding juvenile nui sance. The complaints vary from children play ing football in the street to kids causing criminal damage to buildings.

King Edward House, Finsley Gate, Burnley, BBM 2FS

We recently also received a number of calls regarding teenagers pushing over a wall in the Castle grounds. When the offi

l number of incidents recently have been par ticularly unsavoury.

We understand it is difficult to know what your chil dren are doing when they are out with their friends,

cers arrived, they were shocked to see the extent of the damage caused. On this occasion, a num ber of juveniles were located, after being chased around the town, and their names and addresses were taken and forwarded to Ribble Val ley Borough Council for any cost of damage.

A regular column to help fight crime to keep off.

We also get complaints regarding children play ing on grassed areas and near houses. Children are often asked by their par ents to play near to their homes for safety reasons. Before you pick up the phone and ring the police, consider whether the kids are being delib-

but it is the parents' responsibility to make it their business to know.

PENSIONERS should be aware of workmen tout ing for business in the area.

We would like to issue a safety warning to all those children who have been found climbing on to the top of buildings recently. Schools, facto ries and restaurants seem to be particular favourites at moment.

. erately destructive and annoying, or are they just "kids being kids?" Children are naturally loud and boisterous when they get together, so please have a degree of tolerance when they are playing near you. If they are damaging your prop erty or swearing at you, then don't hesitate to contact us.

THE Green Guerrillas are advancing on all fronts at Bowland High

School, Grindleton. The "regiment" is formed

from members of the lower school and they are consoli dating several previous eco logical victories to improve the area round the com plex. What they lack in financial terms they more than compensate for in sheer enthusiasm. Starting almost a year

ago, the youngsters had won EcoSchool recognition by September. -F Bowland High School has

its own woodland nature reserve and is surrounded by farms, small woodlands and fields. The view across to Pendle Hill is one of the finest enjoyed by any high

school. Present projects involve

tree planting and hedging on the South Field, tree thinning, pond digging and drystone wall repair on the nature reserve and general planting and site improve ment in the grounds by the school buildings. The team is working with

a Year 10 project to create a seating and recreation area on the South Field and soon will be co-ordinating a spring clean \yeek.

and a talk from the vicar, the Rev. Chris Sterry, the pupils from three classes will be leading certain parts of the service.
