A special celebration marks scheme that gives independence

MOTABILITY has been celebrating its 21st birthday and has now reached another milestone in its history - the millionth vehicle on the Motability

Scheme. Motability was set up

on the initiative of the government in 1977 to provide cars and powered wheelchairs to disabled people. The first Motability car

was supplied in 1978, and since then more than 1,000,000 cars and powered wheelchairs have been pro vided.

Advertising Feature The Motability scheme

now has more than 370,000 customers driving or being driven on the road to free dom.

Disabled people receiving

the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disabili ty Living Allowance or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement can use their allowance towards the cost of obtaining a car through the Motability scheme. Special terms have been

arranged with motor manu facturers, banks and insur ers, so that today a variety of schemes can be offered to enable disabled people to

become mobile. Through Motability's

contract hire scheme, dis abled people - including children from the age of five - can acquire a new vehicle from a wide-ranging list of approved manufacturers. All maintenance and servic ing costs are covered, together with comprehen sive insurance and recovery service membership. Motability contract hire

scheme vehicles are avail able through a national net work of Motability accred ited, first-class suppliers. Customers agree to pay

over all or part of their allowance, depending on their choice of vehicle, for

ability

the duration of the three- year agreement. For cars at the lower end of the price spectrum, available with no advance payment, this is the only financial commit ment the disabled person has to make, apart from petrol and oil. For other models, the

customer may be required to make an advance pay ment. This is because the

allowance alone is insuffi cient to cover the cost of providing the vehicle for the three-year term. The amount of the advance payment will vary accord ing to the cost of the vehi cle.

For people who want to buy their vehicles, Motabil ity offers an HP scheme under which finance can be provided towards new and used cars in return for all, or part, of their allowance. The HP scheme also covers powered wheelchairs and scooters. Many people who rely on

the Motability scheme need financial help to pay for adaptations or a larger car to suit their particular dis ability, which they desper ately need, but could not otherwise afford. The Motability charita

ble fund provides grants to pay for such things as hand controls, swivel seats, auto matic transmission, wheel chair hoists, advance pay ments and special driving lessons.

Last year the average

charitable grant award cost Motability £635, but it can actually cost a deal less to provide real, lasting benefit to a disabled person. Every donation received

is vital income. Just £15 could buy an additional mirror and help a disabled person with restricted upper body movement drive safely. Just £15 is all it could

take to help a disabled per son enjoy the benefits of mobility. A motability scheme vehicle is much more than just a means of transport - it is a passport to the outside world, the chance to go to college, to have a job and to live life to the full. If you would like to help

a disabled person by mak ing a donation to Motabili ty please send whatever you can afford to Motability Fund-raising, Goodman House, Station Approach, Harlow, Essex CM20 2ET.

In its 21-year history Motability has changed the lives of thousands of dis

abled people and their families by help ing them access a world of increased mobility and freedom.

In 1995 the charity's Chief Patron HM

The Queen handed over the 500,000th vehicle, dust three years later, the

scheme has reached another milestone with Princess Alexandra handing over the millionth vehicle.
