Public protest snookers Keystreet man's bid for licensed pool hall

Proposer wanted to add to Clitheroe s attractions, but residents objected

PLANS to open a licensed pool hall in Clitheroe have been pocketed by

their proposer following a backlash of public protest. An application to sell them and they are extreme ly popular. I want to add to

alcohol, due to be heard by Blackburn magistrates, has been withdrawn by Mr Phil Knight, co-proprietor of

North Street's teeri venue, StreetCred. He had wanted to convert the back half of the premises into a mem-

bers-only pool hall, fitted with five competition stan dard pool tables and a licensed bar, but a wave of protests from neighbouring residents has snookered his intentions. Explained a disappointed

Mr Knight: "Clitheroe used to have a licensed pool hall on what is now the site of Tesco's supermarket. All neighbouring towns have

Ruptured gas main closes village road

THE main road through Grindleton was closed for nearly 12 hours on Friday afternoon and evening. A gas main ruptured

under the road, near to Southfield Drive, and the leak was so serious that fire fighters from Clitheroe had to stand by for much of the time as repairs were carried out. I t is believed tha t con

tractors are laying new pipe work in the vicinity. Fire-fighters stood by

during repairs from 1 p.m. until around 11-30 p.m. Concerned residents served welcome cups of tea to those who had been called out and, to their delight and surprise, received a letter thanking them this week. Said one of the residents

of Grindleton Road: "They were extremely polite. We were surprised th a t it is unusual for the fire-fighters to receive cups of tea. You could not have met nicer people and the le tte r we received thanking us for the tea tells you the. calibre of the people they, are."

Winners at the bridge club

THE winners of the Howell Movement a t Clitheroe Bridge Club on Monday evening were Mr and Mrs R. Ward, equal second were Mrs M. Butler and Mr P. Roche, Mr J. Pawlicki and Mr J. Renton. Thursday's winners were:

NS, Mr D. Mortimer and Mrs J. Martindale, Mrs B. Tatton and Mr J. Renton. EW, Mrs M. Phillips and Col M. Jeffery, Mr G. and Mr C. Pollard.

Window damage

DAMAGE valued at £250 was caused to a double glazed window in De Lacy Street, Clitheroe, when an object was thrown at it. Police are investigating.

Clitheroe's attractions and saw the licensed pool hall as a way of doing this." Yet a petition handed to

Mr Knight, who also owns Clitheroe's town centre Keystreet Music and Dance Bar business, showed that StreetCred's neighbours did not share his view th a t changes to the currently alcohol-free venue, which opened last year as a meet ing place for youngsters, would be for the better. With names collected by

local town councillor Bob Lightfoot, it expressed their fears of the possibility of alcohol-fuelled increased

noise and nuisance from the premises. Said Mr Knight: "Entry to the pool hall would have been strictly controlled. The neighbour hood is a commercial area in any case, so is not the qui etest, yet I believe if the people protesting would just come into StreetCred and see the facilities we have provided for the youngsters, talk to their parents, who appreciate that Clitheroe now has this meeting place, and look at the area we want to con vert, they would under stand th a t our pool hall plans would not cause them any disruption, but would be an asset for Clitheroe."

BARDSLEY-HANSON

The Moorcock Inn, Waddington, was the setting for the wedding of Miss Charlotte Hanson and Mr Jason Bards- ley.

The bride, a mobile hairdresser, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J. D. T. Hanson, of Genus Centre, Mitton Road,

Whalley, and the bridegroom, of Union Street, Low Moor, is the son of Mr and Mrs J. Bardsley, of Buccleuch Close,

gown of ivory satin,.with a bodice scattered with tiny seed pearls and a cascading train finished with a bow. She car ried a shower bouquet of cream roses, lilies, freesia and Sin

Clitheroe. Given away by her father, the bride wore a crinoline

gapore orchids. The bridesmaids were the bride's nieces, the Misses

Faith and Sarah Thompson and the Misses April and Holly Bailey, wearing hyacinth blue satin dresses and car

rying matching Teddy bears. Dame of honour was Mrs Lesley Ross, who also wore a

hyacinth blue satin dress. Her bouquet was of cream roses

and lilies. Page was Master Aubrey James Hanson, bride's

nephew. Best man was Mr Christopher Hanson, bride's brother, and the groomsman was Mr Graham Thompson, bride's

brother-in-law. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Moor

cock Inn. The couple, who left for a honeymoon in Gran Canaria,

are to make their home in Low Moor. Photo: Raymond Greenwood, Clitheroe.

Fancy footwork at dance workshop

| AGILITY, balance and artistry combined to produce an afternoon of fancy footwork for Year Five youngsters at | Whalley CE Primary

School. The children took part in

a workshop run by mem bers of the RJC Dance

[ company. And, following the workshop, the dancers performed their own work "Vibe" in school. The multi-media presen

tation involved computer graphics, live dance and

video clips. The dance workshop was the second activity which

had taken place in the school as part of a special Millennium project, brought together by the Lancashire Rural Touring Network in partnership with On Tour North York shire and North Pennine Highlights. Members of RJC Dance

and a storytelling trio called "Offbeat Tales"/who had worked with Year Six chil dren the previous week, had visited the Ribble Valley at the invitation of the village hall committee. "All credit to them for having the vision to bring these people to Whalley,'' said school headteacher Mr Brian Beresford.

Castle Cement’s pat op back in report

A PAT on the back has been given to the Castle Cement group in a top-level report. The firm, which has sites in Clitheroe and Ketton, was

well as its accreditation to the environmental standard IS014001, were praised in the strategy document. Mr Iain Walpole, the firm's environment manager, said:

"Castle is committed to sustainable development and to investing in environmental performance. Not only has the company achieved IS014001, but we are implementing a major investment programme which includes replacing energy-intensive wet process kilns with the more efficient dry process."
