today. Mr Terry Wild (63) and
Mr Chris Sharp (53) bought a former fireplace shop in King Street 12 years ago - and tran s formed the premises into the Apricot Meringue. The elegant tea shop,

which draws regular coach parties from as far away as Scotland, has been bought by Miss Helen Wilson, a member of a third genera tion of bakers and confec tioners. Mr Wild and Mr Sharp
say there is to be no special retirement party as they prefer to bow out of the business quietly, but there will be "lots of tissues" on hand is case of a "few tears” among the 12-strong staff, all of whom will be staying on after the change-over. The men bought the
premises after running a tea shop, now a hairdresser's, in Lowergate, Clitheroe, for four years. "We completely gutted
what to call it, we wanted to get away from names such as 'Copper Kettle'," said Mr Wild. They hit on the name,

with his finely-drawn char acters and, on this occasion, we had the pleasure of wit nessing a presentation by Stage Two, Downham, of one of his "Talking Heads" plays. The choice was four short plays from one of his early works - "Bed Among the Lentils". "Cream Crack er Under The Settee", "Chip in the Sugar" and "A Lady of Letters", originally played in the West End by Maggie Smith, Thora Hird, Patricia Routledge and Bennett himself, respective ly. Many people will recall either the stage version or the later television produc tion.

were simple, but effective, and the casting was perfect. The director had at his dis posal four experienced per formers in(Dorothy Cush ing, Pat Hargreaves, Gerry Purchase and Barbara Price, who slotted so well into their respective charac ters with sympathy and understanding, drawing on, and bringing out, the lovely Northern wit and dry humour. Congratulations are in
order to Mel Scorah, the director, and his team of actors and backstage work ers (among whom was a new recruit to lighting, han dling a newly installed sys tem - hang on to him!) for a first-class evening's enter tainment. We look forward to the

A GUILD OF ICERS’ demonstrator, Mrs Bernadette Hadfield, was the guest at a meeting of Clitheroe Lady Farmers' social section at Waddington Sunday School. Mrs Hadfield, assisted by her husband and daughter,
gave an icing demonstration and the cake she had decorat ed was raffled and won by Mrs Doris Coates.
