Caravan raid

A CARAVAN parked in Standen Hall Road, Clitheroe, was broken into and a 14- inch colour television worth £50 and a wallet containing £30 were stolen. Police are investigating.

WEIGHING up a new approach to tackling sums are pupils from Read CE Primary School. They learned how maths

is involved in everyday life during a week-long maths festival, organised by their teachers. Each class exam ined a different aspect of arithmetic, wrote its own sum book, took part in num ber trails, competitions and workshops, which included acting as assistants in a travel agent, garden centre and sweet shop. Maths classes, with dis plays of pupils' work, were

Campaigner slams agency over claims of good air quality

AN air-quality campaign er has slammed Environ ment Agency claims that the local air q u a l i ty is good. Quoting complaint fig

ures, she is demanding that the pollution laws are strengthened - or that the agency is relieved of its duties for not using the pre sent ones enough! But once again the Envi

ronment Agency complete ly rejects what is being said. Mrs J. M. Mortimer, of

Green Drive, Clitheroe, is angry at the agency's stance in view of the number of

complaints about plume grounding from Castle Cement's works.. She points to last week's

letters in the Advertiser and Times, one from someone who lives in the Potteries. Although the Mortimers live only hundreds of yards from the company's stacks, they are concerned for the welfare of others living much further away. Mrs Mortimer says that

the latest figures issued by the company itself, for Jan uary 9th-31st, show tha t there were 22 complaints of either haze or odour outside

the site boundary. Of these, the company concedes that 15 were possibly justified. If this figure is average,

Mrs Mortimer suggests, it could mean that there have been up to 500 possibly jus tified complaints in the two years since "no haze" condi tions came into force. When it comes to diox

ins, Mrs Mortimer quotes the 1998 pollution invento ry which shows Castle Cement's Clitheroe works 15th in England and Wales. " I t is ahead of many

Residents’ concerned as injured deer is shot close to their homes

RESIDENTS of Brockhall Village claim th a t a deer cull which took place in woodland around th e ir homes was n o t only wrong, b u t could have posed potential safety problems. People living in the Ribble Valley

village say they were concerned about the safety of children, adults and pets who use the wooded area where the cull is believed to have taken place on Thursday and Friday. They claim that the cull was being

sporting enjoyment or to "achieve a general reduction in numbers", as had been suggested. In his letter, Mr Hitman said he

was writing to residents as the shoot ing had caused "something of a furore". He explained that the deer had been shot by Mr Frank Thurlow, a wildlife conservation forester, who had worked for the Forestry Commis sion, but was now retired. Mr Hitman explained th a t Mr

carried out to rid the area of the deer, and not to manage the herd, as only six or eight animals have been seen in the area. However, developer Mr Gerald Hit

man has written to residents confirm ing that a deer was shot, but denying that it was killed either to supply the village restaurant with venison, for

Thurlow is regularly called on by the RSPCA, the police and vets to "dis patch diseased or injured beasts". He said that on this particular occasion the RSPCA had called Mr Thurlow to prevent further suffering to an ani mal with a damaged leg, and the deer had been killed with a single shot. Mr Hitman added th a t he had received a number of letters suggest

ing various reasons for the shooting, but he said that none was the case. He said that the RSPCA had received a number of notifications from Brook- side residents about the difficulty the injured deer was in. Mr Hitman con cluded by saying that Mr Thurlow had been contacted by the animal protection organisation and come on to his land as a result. The residents' association was alert

ed after a female resident saw a man near her land with documents which he claimed gave him permission to cull deer on Brockhall Village land. Mr Mike Murdoch, from the resi

dents' association, said safety in the woodland had been the top priority as far as householders were concerned, as it is frequented by children and adults who use the woods to walk dogs.

Goal machine helps Reserves to cup final

A GOAL within the first 10 minutes set the holders on their way to a League Cup final showdown with Cheadle Town. Goal machine Matt Gamer finished

off a move that ripped the Ramsbot- tom defence wide open. Adam Whit tle won an important tackle in mid- field and found the impressive Jason Jones who, in turn, fed Ian Pilkington wide on the right. He skipped past his marker and

drove a low cross into the six-yard box where Garner was lurking to add to his collection of goals for this season. In a physical encounter, which

ended with a United player being dis missed for a late tackle, Clitheroe warmed to the challenge to make it through to their third final in four sea

sons. A lively Ramsbottom attack kept

the Blues on their toes as they endured lengthy periods of United pressure. However, Clitheroe extended their

as tackles came in from all angles. Tempers flared 10 minutes before time when Pilkington was cynically upended and the referee had no option but to dismiss the culprit. The 10 men of Ramsbottom pulled

a goal back in injury time but it was too little too late. • The final is to be played at Salford City on Wednesday, April 19th, kick off 7-30 p.m. The club is expecting a healthy

WITHOUT top-scorer Gary Jack- son, the Blues showed they can still put the ball in the net. In a devastating first half display, Clitheroe scored five.

On 10 minutes Nick Lord put the

locals ahead, only for the Blackburn side to level shortly after. The Blues played some of their best

football of the season and were rewarded when great build-up play ended with Lord going through to round the keeper for his second. Gronow made it 3-1 moments later

and more good football produced a fourth, when Lord's cross was fired home by Tom Ilibbert. Hibbert then turned provider, cross

ing for Gronow to head a fifth. In the second half, with the game

won, Glen Taylor powered homo a free kick to extend the lead, and Mill Hill netted two consolation goals. Keeper Woodhead made a couple of

gqod saves late on and was named man-of-the-match. This Sunday the youth team are
