THE PREMIER PAPER FOR BUYING AND SELLING IN THE RIBBLE VALLEY

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, May 11th, 2000 34 HUNDREDS j 'j J D ' T D i i J i ' J i l That’s the new version of Mazda Demio g ? : - f S e & s s

powerful engines, sportier handling, more equipment and improved safety features - all at no extra cost. The new models have new front and rear

bumpers, new side markers, new alloy wheels and double headlights. But the big changes are under the skin.

Volvo says all the engines, including the impressive T4 and 2.0 litre light pressure turbo units, develop more power and are more responsive. The previous 95 b.h.p., 1.9 litre turbo

The chassis has been stretched and

IT'S always hard to be ahead of your time. When the original Mazda Demio was launched in the UK in 1998, it was something of a curiosity: cus tomers back then thought very differently about what constituted a people-carrying MPV.

widened to accommodate bigger tyres. The engineers say the result of their tweaks is dramatically improved comfort and han dling for both the saloon and estate.

curtain, taken from the bigger and more expensive S80, which substantially reduces the risk of head injuries in a side impact by inflating in 25 thousandths of a second. Dri ver airbags are standard and passenger airbags are a no-cost option.

The revised models feature an inflatable

padding in the seats and more equipment. Air conditioning, remote central locking, electric front windows and heated door mir rors are standard on all models.

Prices have been pegged, starting at £14,495 for the entry-level S40.

EAT loses no opportunity to tell you what a cool manufacturer it has become.

And now it has released special value edi

tions of the Ibiza and Cordoba (pictured above) with air conditioning as standard.

Just in case you had not got the message

the new models, available with O per cent finance, are called "dot cool" and they can save customers more than £1,500 on the purchase price.

Prices start at £7,995 and there is a choice

of 1.4 litre 60 b.h.p. petrol and 1.9 litre SDi diesel engines.

T The new cabin has a revised console, more

have removable seats, lofty driving positions and accommodate up to seven passengers? Not necessari ly, as we now know.

Mini-MPVs, like

Renault's Scenic, have proved that five seats in a car the size of a family hatchback can create a gen uine multi-purpose people carrier, providing the space is used creatively enough. Even more recently, we have seen a class of MPV which is smaller still, thanks to supermini-sized contenders like Suzuki's Wagon R+, Mitsubishi's Space Star and Toyota's Yaris Verso.

JUST because you need a small car, there is no reason why it cannot be almost as versatile as a larger one. Jonathan Crouch checks out Mazda's latest Demio.

Cars like these cannot

carry any more people than the conventional superminis or family hatchbacks on which they are based. What they can do, however, is carry their passengers in a more spacious, versatile environment, often negating

the need to move up to a larger class of car.

Which of course is exactly

what the Demio has always set out to do. It aims to take on Toyota, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and others in the smallest MPV sector, estab lishing an important first rung on a Mazda ownership ladder that will hopefully lead customers on to the Scenic-sized Premacy and the Galaxy-sized Mazda MPV. To that end, the bodywork now has a corpo rate “mini-Premacy” look, as does the re-styled dash board.

Fundamentally, however,

relatively little else has changed, though there is

now a choice of two petrol engines (a 1.5 as well as the previous 1.3), an automatic option, better safety and security, plus subtly improved ride and handling.

The prices being asked

(£9,000-£11,000) pitch this car towards the top of its class - but then so does the amount of space inside.

Certainly, significantly

more than you would find in Far Eastern-style “micro boxes”, like the Wagon R+ and its sister car, Vauxhall's Agila.

This Mazda will conceiv

ably take three people across the back seat.

Not that you would want

to do that on a regular basis or over-long journeys. The Demio is not that wide and the seating space there is requires you to sit up pretty straight (just like your mother always said you should), courtesy of the

short but tall body (1535mm with roof rails). Four adults sit very com

fortably, however, even at the back thanks to a rear seat that can be reclined into 17 positions and shifted within a range of 120mm, so that you can vary either leg room or luggage space.

In fact, when it comes to

baggage, the Demio is even more versatile for a car of its size. With the 50:50 split folding rear seat upright, there is room for up to 365 litres of luggage, a figure that rises to 1298 litres (as much as a Mazda 626 Estate) should you choose to double-fold the rear bench flat: that's enough to

Rover sales rise

HE increase in the sale of Rover cars nationally has been matched locally.

Rover sales figures have gone through the roof this

month at Homers Burnley dealership - with a 366% increase on last years figures for the month of April. Homers says the increase can be attributed to the fact that customers are staying loyal and supporting British manufac turers.

stow two fully assembled mountain bikes.

Other pluses include a

high rear tailgate and a low sill height for easy loading.

Where the car is not quite

as impressive is in its lack of storage space. There are no

useful cupboards, nets or under-floor compartments

like those you find in a Scenic. Just the usual cupholders, glovebox and an open storage bin ahead of the front passenger seat.

At least the interior itself

is a more pleasant place to be, providing you have no allergy to plastic: lighter colours and a new instru ment panel make it feel a lot less down-market.

Even on the entry-level

£9,000 1.3 LXi, equipment levels run to twin front airbags (with a deactivation feature for that on the pas senger side), roof rails, an adjustable steering wheel, colour-keyed bumpers, power steering and driver’s seat height adjustment.

The £10,000 1.3 GXi

adds an alarm, central lock ing, all-round electric win dows, power mirrors and a rev. counter, while the £11,0001.5 GSi also

includes ABS (with Elec tronic Brake Force Distribu tion), an electric sunroof, front foglamps and velour

trim. The more powerful 75

b.h.p. 1.5-litre model is the only version with an auto

matic gearbox option. Equipment levels apart, it is

hard to see many buyers choosing it for any other reason over the 63 b.h.p. 1.3, for it is not much bister (rest to 60 in 13 secs, instead of 14 secs on the way to 99 instead of 93 m.p.h.) The fuel figures are similar too: expect around 40 m.p.g. in regular use.

Nice touches include a

special air filter built into the optional air conditioning

system to keep out diesel fumes and cigarette smoke. Plus there is an automatic reversal mechanism for the driver’s side electric window, which ensures the window retracts 200mm and stops should it sense an obstruc tion in auto-close mode.

Overall, however, the

Demio is a strong all-round package, good enough to give Mazda a very class- competitive contender in this growing sector.
