Fast and furious!

reviewGasping; Grand Theatre;v Blackpool...........

....

FROM the word go it was obvi ous that this play had been

penned by Ben Elton. The pace at which the words were

delivered, together with the fast and furious speed at which the audience was hit with a series of one-liners, were all familiar trademarks of the author who has been responsible for writing many top television hits, such as "Blackadder" and "The Thin Blue Line". In this production, the lead role of

Philip - top dog at Lockheart - was played by David Haig, better known by many as Bernard in the film "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and as CID’s Detective Inspector Grim in "The Thin Blue Line". Once again, he seemed to have

been typecast in this particular play. Many of his gestures and facial expressions were familiar from his previous incarnations on both the small and large screen. Neil Stacy - formerly of "Duty

Free" - together with Stephen Mapes and Iona Grant made up the rest of the small cast which played

out this production. The action centred around

Philip’s plans to come up with a brand new money-making scheme. Once his new idea had been given PR spin by Kirsten Carlton - whose claim to fame was the fact that she had brought the jammy dodger back from the dead - it was launched on a waiting world with ultimately breathless results. After a shakey start - where the

dialogue was just a little too fast and furious for my liking - the pace did slow down in the second half. Some funny one-liners wore well received, but the action came to an almost abrupt halt. Truth be known - as we say up north - I would have to see another Elton play before I make my mind up about this aspect of his work.

AFTER hearing that a new. Continental style of eating had arrived in Burnley. I was dying to

have a taste. Burnley's Rosehill House Hotel now has a

tapas restaurant housed in its conservatory extension, offering impressive snappy tapas and a taste of the Mediterranean. A table for two soon turned to a table for

eight as eager relatives decided they too wanted to sample the exotic delights. And between eight of us, we practically covered most of the menu. Although the list wasn't all that long, there

was a choice of the usual and the not-so-usual dishes, each covered in a sauce all of its own, using ingredients such as goat's cheese, white wine, peppers and red onions and spices like paprika, tarragon, coriander and salsa.

breast, artichokes, tiger prawns, grey mullet, spicy Spanish sausage and meatballs, and even

The menu included chicken wings, chicken

squid. The boiled rice had a lovely, fruity, tangy taste to it and was an ideal accompaniment for

many of the dishes. The side salads were really different and

extremely delicious. I chose the Asiana Ensala- da. which was a bowl full of mixed leaves with spring onions, beansprouts, deep fried leeks, prawn crackers and coriander in a caramelised ginger and soy dressing. But I also sampled the one my sister had chosen - lettuce leaves tossed with a’ fennel and fresh parmesan, dressed with black pepper and olive oil. That too was lovely. There is also a choice of baguettes and side

WARM SESAME CHICKEN AND LAMB'S LETTUCE SALAD

CONTINUING our lamb's lettuce theme, here we have a main course for you to try. But first the history of this little

honour bestowed on few. Intrigued by lamb's lettuce, da Vinci captured the pretty leaf back in the 15th Century, near the time when lamb's lettuce from the Loire first emerged. Grow ing wild in the grounds of the great chateaux of Blois, Cherion- ceau and Chambord, the lettuce was picked and enjoyed by

leaf. The privilege of being painted by Leonardo da Vinci is an

b S i : The rules of selecting the best lamb’s lettuce are simple and

infallible. It should have well-formed bouquets that do not curl. The leaves should be soft, with a lovely, flat green colour and a velvet-like appearance. After purchase, lamb’s lettuce can be stored unopened in a refrigerator for up to a week, or

three days, once opened. To serve lamb’s lettuce, simply place it in a colander, rinse

and drain. Never leave the lettuce immersed in water. If the salad needs reviving, plunge it quickly in fresh water, with a few drops of vinegar. To dry, place the leaves carefully in a salad spinner, and spin. To season and dress, place seasoning and salad dressing in a bowl then add the leaves, not the other way round.

A BIT of warm weather at last!

Tha t means

that I can begin recommending a few nice white wines to drink s itting out of doors or to a c c o m p a n y your barbecue.

A good value dry white is BASA

1398 at £4.09. This wine is from the ancient town of Rueda, which is sit uated on the high plateau of Castile ir. the North of Spain, and is increas ingly known for excellent white w.nes based on the Verdejo grape. This example also has a small an o u nt of viura and sauvignon blinc. The best winemaker of Rueda, werking in collaboration with Telmo Rodriguez Salis (a very famous winemaker from Rioja) has made thii wine for relishing right now. /. classic dry white with fresh fruit
