Worldwide fame for Valley pub featured in Time magazine
KIBBLE VALLEY restaurateur Paul Cryer has been trying to solve a mys tery which has taken him from Singapore to Settle and from Billington to Bangkok.
His quest was to find
out how advertisements for the Judge Walmesley appeared in magazines found in the Philippines and Singapore. "Two years ago, I was
asked for information about the pub," explained Mr Cryer, who runs the Billington-based pub and
Dao Siam restaurant with his Thai wife, Buaphat. "But I never heard any thing until 12 months ago when a customer was in Manila airport in the Philippines and saw an advert about us." The customer sent the
report by Natalie Cox
within weeks all was revealed. I t turned out that the
publication, which had been printed in early 1999, was part of a four-month adver tising campaign called Great Ileineken Bars of the World. Mr Cryer believes that

cutting to Mr Cryer, but the magazine of origin remained a mystery until about a month ago. "A man from Settle rang us to say he had a copy of Time magazine in front of him with our feature in it. He had picked it up in Singapore, where he had been on holiday," said Mr Cryer. . After booking a table, the

reproduced here, the Judge Walmesley is depicted as a pint of Ileineken wearing a wig and is set alongside information about the pub's origins, a mention of the Thai restaurant and an invi tation which says: "But please, don't take our word for it. You be the judge". "I think they picked us
man brought the magazine with him, at last giving Mr Cryer a lead. "It meant we could trace the source," said landlord-cum-amateur-
detective Mr Cryer. He wrote to Ileineken HQ
in the Netherlands and Time Magazine's head office in New York in a bid to unravel the riddle - and
Mr Cryer also has a number of back copies of the maga zine which helped put the Judge Walmesley truly on
the map. Pictured below are Paul

Course gets D Js in a real spin
WOULD-BE D Js from the Ribble Valley went behind the decks during a weekend training ses sion held at the Burn-
ley-based Coldwell Inn. The aim of the activity
weekend was to give youth club members from rural parts of the Ribble Valley the confidence to step up to the micro phone, make music and carry out running repairs to equipment. Leading the activities
were Pino Pozzi and Lisa Allerton, both Ribble Val ley-based youth and com munity workers from Lan cashire County Council,
and James Brunning, a rural worker. The dozen youngsters
who spent the weekend away represented youth clubs in Billington, Slaid burn and Read, among oth ers.
All who completed the
course, which made use of CD and conventional decks, as well as digital cameras, were presented with a cer tificate from the county council. They are now able to book out equipment which is available from the
service. The would-be DJs are pictured before setting off
on their training weekend. (1900300/5/22a)
Ownership of bridge remains unclear
THE ownership of S p r in g B r id g e a cross the River Ribble at Edisford is still unclear. As reported last week,
Lancashire County Coun cil says it will maintain it, as part of its formal adop tion of the footpath link ing Clitheroe and Waddington. But the chairman of the
county's Public Rights of Way Sub-committee, Coun ty Coun. Tim Ormrod, says: "It is unclear who now owns the bridge, but we have decided that the coun ty council should take on the maintenance to ensure
the path stays open." A bridge has existed at the spot for about 150
years. The present one was erected after the war by Ribble Cement, whose workers at that time used the route. The county received a
large petition and numerous letters urging adoption of the footpath. Coun. John
McGowan, who represents the area on Ribble Valley Borough and Clitheroe Town Councils, says: "This is a victory for local people, but it has taken a nine-year fight. Now we are waiting to see when there will be any action on repairing the bridge.”

A good night’s sleep can be the real key to healthy living
_____
YOUR lifestyle may be seri ously affecting your ability to sleep. That is the message from the Sleep Council for National Bed Month 2000. The 11th annual bed month
kicked off this week. Top sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski says a good night's sleep is vital to a happy and h e a lth y lifestyle. Yet i t is often our lifestyle which stops us from sleeping as well as we might. "A lot of people are very

Your body and, therefore, general well-being will benefit from a bedtime routine that allows you a good 7-8 hours sleep each night. Try to go to bed and get up each morning at roughly the same
time. 9 Would you describe your diet
as varied? Does it include lots of grain, vegetable and fruit, but lit tle fat, sugar and salt? A few small changes can make a big, big difference. • Do you rely on alcohol to
relax you? Drinking in modera tion is something most of us enjoy. But too much of it can seri
ously upset your sleep. 9 Do you smoke on a regular
basis? Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death and
ill-health. And smokers take sig n i f i / i n n l - l i r I n n f r n r f n rr a
nificantly longer to get off to sleep than non-smokers. • How comfortable is your
bed? If it is more than eight to 10 years old, it is time for a new one. A good bed will help give you a good night's sleep and leave you feeling better to face each day. 9 Do you take time out for
yourself each day? Whether it is spent being active or relaxing, it should be a chance to mentally unwind and reflect on things that might otherwise keep you awake at night. 9 How much caffeine do you
drink each day? Too much coffee or tea, particularly close to bed time, will kick-start the metabo lism and make it difficult to nod off. • Is your glass half full or half
empty? Positive thoughts will help fight niggling worries and the kind of stress that keeps you
awake at night.
A GOOD, comfortable bed is vital for you to have a good night’s sleep, which will leave you suitably refreshed to face the next day.
