Have-a-go teenagers praised for their courageous actions
THE actions of two Ribble Val ley crime stoppers have been
hailed as brave and courageous. Plucky Chris Jay (17) kept his cool
as a conman tried to trick him into handing over cash, while Andrew Korol (14) has been hailed a hero after he stepped in to help an elderly woman whose bag had been snatched in Burnley town centre. Chris, a pupil at CRGS Sixth Form,
was working in the Abbey Candy Store in King Street, Whalley, on Sat urday afternoon when he became sus picious about a man who had bought some items with a £20 note. After some monetary exchanges and further discussion the man claimed he had not been given enough cash back by the teenager. "I said if the till was up and if he
gave me his name and number I would refund it to him, but he started swearing" explained Chris, who lives in Whalley and had been working in the shop that afternoon with Claire Shepherd. "There were a lot children in the shop and a few of them were upset by the harsh language. He threatened to jump over the counter and smack me."

BURN (Doris) April 10th
jamin, a haemophilia suf ferer, is the son of the owner of the Angela Westwell School of Dance, in Clitheroe. And it was the help he
receives from the society which was the inspiration behind the fund-raising by the young dancing girls and
boys.: They raised the cash at
their sell-out Rhythm 2000 show, held a t Clitheroe Royal Grammar School's Chatburn Road building in February. Benjamin's mum, Mrs
Angela Briscoe, says her son used to be a pupil a t her school, but left when he was very small because "he's mad on football and prefers it to dancing". Mrs Briscoe and hus-
band, Simon, of High Moor Park, Clitheroe, are mem bers of the Haemophilia Society's North-West Branch. The charity gives useful advice on the condi tion, which affects only boys and men and prevents blood from clotting natu rally. The Briscoes meet up with other families with young sons with the defi ciency through their mem bership. Benjamin, a pupil at Oakworth College, Whalley,
leads a normal life
-.thanks to injections three times a week of a blood-clotting agent. He has a four-year- old sister, Brittany, who was among dancing girls pre sent when Sister Alex Shaw, representing the society, received the cheque. Our picture shows Ben
jamin (standing left), with his mother, presenting the cheque to Sister Shaw (right) and dance school pupils. (0304000/9/29).
Extra seat on the borough council
AN increase from 39 to 40 in the number of seats on Ribble Valley Borough Council is being proposed . The Local Government
Commission is looking at ways of equalling out elec tor-councillor proportions, and feels this increase is needed. However, the num ber of wards would remain the same at 24. Both the council itself

Agency under fire says figures
are out of date
THE Environment Agency has dismissed "fail ure" allegations against it, claiming some figures
quoted are out of date. A broadside from Friends of the Earth head ed "Green watchdog or industry poodle?" quotes a report by independent con sultants. This "highlights the

Environment Agency's fail ure to adequately control the notorious Castle Cement plant located in a valley in Clitheroe. "The report reveals that
the plume from the plant is grounding on nearby homes, schools, and a com munity hospital, making life a misery for local resi
dents. "It also reveals that since
the Environment Agency allowed the plant to burn toxic wastes there have been increases in releases of particulates and heavy met als."
Friends of the Earth also

that Castle Cement’s releas es into the atmosphere are within the guidlines. "In fact, they are general
ly decreasing, and meet the levels which will not be compulsory until 2005. So the company is ahead of the legislation. The Friends of the Earth figures are out of date." A careful watch is kept
on all emissions and none cause concern, says the agency. In fact, the air qual ity is generally good in the area.

David Blunkett confirmed Lancashire County Coun cil's view that closure is the only option. It was felt that Tosside is too small to meet current educational ideas, and the nine pupils cost six times the county average to educate. "The governors were well
aware of the figures, but had hoped that the need to retain an important com-
terbalance them," said vice- chairman Mrs Judith Carter yesterday. "Govern ment policy indicates that these sort of considerations should be borne in mind, and th a t small schools should be preserved. The news came as a sad shock." Local MP Mr Nigel
stand the countryside." Emotions ran high as the
whole of Tosside fought a long and hard fight to retain the school. The county education
Evans spoke of his bitter disappointment at a body blow to a small rural com munity. "Tosside will now be the poorer for the closure of the school and once again it demonstrates that this Gov- ernmment does not under
THE major blaze at its Burnley plant is not expected to affect the Clitheroe operations of Rectella
chairman, County Coun. Hazel Harding, says: "It was our view that the edu cational interests of the chil dren were not best served by maintaining this very small school." Now_ everything possible will be done to esure a smooth transition to the new pattern of primary school provision in the area. Official closure date is August 31st.
Local plant unlikely to b e hit by blaze
International Ltd. Production of its world-famous barbecue
line came to a dramatic halt at lunchtime on Mnnday as fire engulfed part of the fac tory in Bancroft Road, Burnley. More than 100 fire-fighters from across the county and
West Yorkshire helped to tackle the blaze and 100 employees, some of whom come from Clitheroe, were evacuated. Early esti mates put the damage at more than £lm. and company management were yesterday still assessing the total damage. More than two thirds of the premises on
the 6.5-acre site were destroyed and pro duction is likely to resume in two weeks.
Centre and the staff of W a rd 7 at Queens Park.
However, when the shop's owner
Coun. Joyce Holgate was alerted to the incident she telephoned the police
and the man left. Although Chris did manage to
watch him for a while he eventually got away. "I ran out and followed him so I could point him out to the police. I stood outside the takeaway and watched him, but then he saw me and started swearing. He legged it and I legged it after him. He got to the bridge and heard the sirens and he must have jumped over the bridge, we never saw him again." Chris added that village stalwart
Mrs Holgate had been worried that the weekend's foiled theft could have ended up like a couple of incidents in Billington earlier this year where a knife was pulled on shop staff. "She was worried it would happen to her. She was worried in case he pulled a knife out or a gun or something," said Chris. Speaking about the incident, and
Chris's actions, Coun. Holgate said: "The man was on his own, but he was so abusive and that was frightening more than anything. Chris was brave for following him down the street."
Gisburn teenager Andrew Korol
appears to be following in the foot steps of his father - a bobby on the
rural Ribble valley beat. On Saturday morning the 14-year-
old former Gisburn Primary School pupil was in Burnley town centre with his mother, Mrs Freda Korol. The pair were going up the market escala tor when they heard a woman, whose bag had been snatched by a would-be
thief, shouting for help. Said Andrew: "The woman stood at
the top shouting 'can you stop him'. The man was running down the esca lator. Another boy tried grabbing at the bag, the man turned round and then I grabbed it off him. Instinct just took over and I grabbed it." Andrew, who now attends West
Craven High School, said his father, PC George Korol, was now calling him a hero. And, after hearing what the youngster had done from Andrew's father, Ribble Valley resi dent, Mr Thomas Croston, from Bolton-by-Bpwland, said: "That is what I call courage. He has got a lot of guts. I think it should be known th a t there are good youngsters about."
