having experience before going into business is clearly demonstrated at Keystreet. The couple had years in the

trade, and Mr Knight was both in a hand and also a stage manager for big groups travelling the world. Ilis building background has also been vital in get ting the best from the pub. Asked to summarise their

success for the competition, the couple said they had

turned a non-trading, derelict establishment - the former Cross Keys pub - into the most popular pub in Clitheroe and the sur rounding area. Many top named acts have been attracted, without door charges, many full and part-time jobs have been

created and the spin-off American theme diner offers a place for older chil dren. "We are currently design

ing an expansion plan which will increase our capacity by expanding the music room, including a dining area and VIP's bar,

are right and you have been wrong. It only shows that it was a very clever piece of reasoning. The evidence presented in law courts can be equally convincing, for or against. Eloquence can be very persuasive at times, as is sometimes evident in politics. Truth can be distorted and logic played about with until it is bard to

UST because someone has been clever enough to present a good argument

distinguish the truth after hearing both sides being cleverely present ed. Really experienced debaters could make out a convincing case for either side. This proves nothing but the fact that these men are clever wordmasters. Each can muster his facts and juggle with impressive statistics to make a plausible case and have you at a loss to know which is the truth. St Paul, who was accustomed to

the power of speech and the clever use of words, wrote a warning against wordy arguments in Timo thy 2 Ch. 2 v., 14. "Remind your people of these things and charge them not to engage in battles of words, a thing of no use at all and a

thing which can only result in the undoing of those who listen to it." I-Ie was pointing out that too

much talk and discussion can be dangerous. Faith can be shaken by people exchanging peculiar ideas and theories in discussion that stray far from the simple truth. Have you ever watched a climber

making slow but sure progress up a difficult rock face? He has to do his best with hands and feet. Relying completely on three points which he knows he can trust, he moves a groping hand or foot in an endeav our to make some progress. He must be able to rely on those three holds in which he trusts. We all need truths on which we

can rely. As we seek to make progress in understanding, groping in strange territory at times with completely new ideas, we need to have something to hold on to. We depend on beliefs that we do not doubt but take for granted. Sometimes our certainties are

Pub’s hair-raising event for children at Christie’s

AN impromptu headshave by regu lars at a Clitheroe pub resulted in major hair loss for more than a few

customers! What began as a light-hearted sugges

tion developed rather faster than antici pated, with a number of King's Arms reg ulars volunteering to say farewell to their

locks for charity. The sum of £200 was raised for the chil

dren's ward at Christie's during an evening described by landlady Mrs Joyce Jones as "very enjoyable." "The support given by the locals was brilliant", she added. Quite a few cus

tomers tried their hand at shaving hair, with Rawson's stylist Miss Lisa Knight carrying out a final tidy-up operation for anyone in need! The event has resulted in a spin-off on

Easter Saturday, with the pub hosting a fun children's party for adults. Various events are planned and funds

raised will go to the parents' home at Alder Hey children's hospital. Pictured are two of those whose locks

were removed for charity, from the left: Mr Tony Ridgway and Mr Kevin Braysford, with Mr and Mrs Mick and Wendy Isherwood. (210300/24/12)

THE team running Clitheroe Castle Muse um is very hopeful of increasing the a t ten

tourists and local people call in, but there are hopes to get that nearer to 15,000. Though he has retired

dance figures this year. Usually about 13,000

Mr Ken Ryan (pictured) has still had a part to play in the revamp of the muse um shop. Few such places have expertise of this level available and now the shop has a bright new look. The science week promo

increasing our toilet facili ties and generally refurbish ing the pub." The-couple will be very

interested to hear about the achievements of the other finalists. To get so far is a compliment to them, and indirectly to the customers who have supported them.

On the up and up

tion at the museum was very successful. Curator and geology expert Miss Helen Tombs put on a series

of "hands on" activities, making good use of the museum's exceptional col lections of rocks and miner als. It was well received by adults and children alike. Now she and custodian Miss Mary Hornby are con sidering future special events.

Memorial to Dorothy

THE main hall of the Pendle Club, Clitheroe, is to be named "The Dorothy Rushton Memorial Hall" in memo ry of its founder. Miss Rushton died in February aged 96. As chairman

Mr Brian Haig points out in his annual report, she sup ported the club right up to her death as a trustee. The accounts show that she was a considerable benefactor as well. Mr Haig says that thousands of members over the years

have owed a debt of gratitude to Miss Rushton for her forethought and meticulous planning of club and commit tees. The naming provides a fitting memory to a wonderful ~ person whom everyone had hoped would still be about for the club's golden jubilee in November.

Ofsted points confirmed

THIS column likes to see its points confirmed by people who know more about them than it does. A recent note about concerns over Ofsted standards and

the unease felt in advance of inspections is paralleled by a report from the Teachers' Benevolent Fund. Its support network takes calls from members of the

profession with problems, and while they accept that mon itoring in education is necessary to increase standards, "the individual and collective cost can often feel too great." There are feelings of being overwhelmed by the amount

of paperwork in advance of the inspection and concern that they may not do themselves justice. Some callers see Ofsted as a means of focusing attention on the most nega tive aspects of a school.

Clerk’s work was much valued

MANY of the officials who run key public services are lit tle known to the general public. One good example is Mr Lawrence Loft, who has just taken early retirement as clerk not only to the local magistrates, but also to those sitting at Hyndburn, Chorley, Leyland and Ormskirk. His services were much valued by the magistrates, the

legal profession and everyone involved with the running of the courts and compliments were expressed to him before he left. Reorganisation of the clerks' service is now under way.

few indeed, and we need blessed assurance to strengthen us for fur ther advances. Clever, subtle, intel- lectually-reckless disputations can have the effect of demolishing the simple faith of those who find themselves involved in it. We need to hold fast to that which we know is good and reliable and, as Paul would say:"Avoid doubtful disputa tions." (Romans 14:1)
