OUR last month's wine club tasting was a marathon of chunky, spicy and almost chewy heavyweight red wines. Gathered from California, Italy,

France, Chile and South Africa we had a huge number of different grape varieties to pit against each other. My only disappointments were the

two pinotages we tried. They were both good b u t too lightweight against the other wines. Perhaps if I used grangehurst, i t would have enough body to cope with the likes of the carignan, petite sirah, grenache and zinfandel grape varieties we tast ed.

lived, deeply-coloured wines. The high extract of colour renders this wine almost inky black in colour, with a lovely woody nose, almost the smell of burning embers in an open fire. Dense, opulent autumnal berries mix on the palate with caramel and tar, with the finish, high in tannins also being full of th a t burnt oaky ness. All these flavours are crammed into a bottle for only £12.19, avail able a t D. Byrne. This is a serious food wine, not to be drunk on its own. In a close second place went an

Pleiades Vi Old Vines, from Oddbins for £12.99. A hefty price tag, but so much originality goes into his small scale production, it is worth it for a special dinner. Parcels of super ripe grapes all from old vines, are sourced from the best sites in California. This vintage is a blend of syrah, zinfandel, carignane, petite sirah, nebbiolo, grenache, mourvedre and merlot. The flavours leap out of the glass, like a salmon up a waterfall. Soft, juicy summer berries on the nose fol low onto the palate in a rich, ripe wine of immense intensity, with a very long finish. This wine is in short supply; my bo ttle came from the Alderley Edge shop, but it is worth looking out for it.
