Important role of women in today’s world of agriculture on agenda
FARM women from the Rib- ble Valley made their way to London to attend the NFU's World Rural Women's Confer
ence. The conference, held a t the
Royal Society, examined the increasingly im p o r ta n t role played by women in agriculture, with many farms having to diversify to s tay in business.
Many are launching ventures such as shops, restaurants and bed and breakfasts, which are predominantly run by women.
> A number of workshops were held providing basic business training and helping personal
development. Hundreds of women from all
over the British Isles attended the conference and heard that over a
quarter of farmers' wives ran additional businesses on the farm, according to an NFU survey. They also learned that the num ber of women enrolling on agri cultural courses now outnum bered the men.
Regional Public Relations Officer, said: "As the financial pressure on Britain's farmers tightens, it is the entrepreneurial spirit of women

The increasing number of women who are enrolling on agricultural train ing courses is testimony, to their drive and initiative. Through this conference the: NFU aims to empower more women to continue
this vital role." Rotarians and guests enjoy charter night s iA:.; x -

Fiction display with £5,000 worth of books at Clitheroe Library
FIRESIDE fiction is the theme of a new temporary collection of books on display for loan a t Clitheroe
Library. It is valued at £5,000 and titles include
romances, mysteries and horror, as well as a special section of picture books and sto
ries for children. It is exhibited in the library entrance hall
and authors vary from Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen to Jackie Collins and Jilly Cooper, but potential bookworms have
only until the end of November to plough their way through it. En masse, it then transfers to neighbouring libraries in Nel son, Colne and Burnley. Designed to encourage more home read
ing in this, the National Year of Reading, the books were unveiled in a special Clitheroe Library ceremony, as our picture shows, by divisional librarian Mr John Hodgkinson, Mrs Kate Creig, of Clitheroe Reading Group, and county library man ager Mr David Lightfoot. (131098/4/5)
To be shadow of former self?
THE MP for the Rib- ble Valley, Mr Nigel Evans, hopes to become a shadow of his former self by losing weight over th e next thre e months to raise funds for Save the Children. Weightwatchers are to bring the guillotine down
on those participating MPs' over-indulgent diets by setting a nutritional programme suiting their generally physically-inert
lifestyle. Mr Evans said: "It seems
the only exercise that some MPs get is standing up in the chamber of the House of Commons. It is easier to
gain weight than to gain votes at Westminster. Los ing one's rag at the Govern ment does not mean losing weight. Late night sittings may mean a late-night snacking rather than late night exercising. I intend to lose unnecessary pounds off the waistline to gain extra pounds for children who need it."
