| A few days ago, our, con- / \ gregation gathered
X .Ground the Lord's Table to share in the service of remembrance and rerdedica- tion, the Sacrament of the
Lord's Supper. We ate the symbolic bread and
wine, deeply aware of our. unworthi
ness to partake of the merited grace of our Lord, and accepted the fore- giveness of our sins with relief and gladness in gratitude for the Caring Presence. ! Once again, we were thankful for the opportunity to be able to repent
' openly for our unworthiness and re dedicate our lives in the service of Jesus Christ, leaving the little cere
mony to pursue the Christian way of life, renewed and restored in spir-, itual health and strength to'cope with the challenge to our faith in everyday living. We all need this help regularly,
and to recognise the value of such Holy Communion. Perhaps some of my readers already realise its helpfulness, but I
feel a necessity to remind myself of the full meaning of it at times, and so to bring up this valuable subject from time to time, so seeking to pass on a valuable "Thought for the Week." : May God's blessing be with you in the coming days.'

I centre for international trans port. Unlikely as it-seems,
I
found in this quiet little spot- and what is more they are
housed in the back of a publ' There can be few hostelries in the
country, if any a t all, which can boast their own model transport museum in the back room. I am sure that none of them could rival the magical collection landlord Mr Michael Blades has put together in the village's Black Bull Inn. I t has taken over two years for the collec tion to come into fruition. And, at last, the museum was to be opened in style last night by North West Railtrack director Mr Richard
Feam. The museum is simply stagger -
ing. The sign in the pub entrance warning "Beware of trains" cannot prepare the visitor for what awaits inside. Between the numerous rail-
1 way signs and b its arid pieces which fill every nook and cranny of the place are glass cases containing intric a te ly- detailed models of planes, ships and trains. These are not the plasic models that used to infuriatingly stick to your mother's best table cloth either. These are six feet long full-working replicas, small

the.carpet., A vast'array of replica war. plan es,. battleships, 'Mississippi river cruise ers, steam engines, motor, cars and buses confronts the visitor. ,It’ would take a small book for me to list just half of the models on display. Look up and there is a USAF B17F Fly ing Fortress American bomber with wings that measure nine-feet across.
I t menacingly hangs over several "pocket sized battleships", includ ing a magnificent eight-feet long version of the HMS Invincible. As well as the "big guns" in one comer, there is a small collection of Dinky die-cast buses, including a quaintly- named Ribble Gay Hostess coach. This was a talking point in the post-war austerity era when it con veyed passengers between East Lancashire and London with a hostess aboard serving refresments during the journey. Mr Blades, originally a Nelson
man, has a love of transport which was fuelled by his experiences on the footplate of steam locomotives in the Burnley area as a youth. He later became a salesman, an occu pation which took him and his wife, Barbara, to Canada for 22 years, and it was there that his rail passion was rekindled. On his travels he came across a model steam engine

I haul for popular Mr Herd, i While his schoolmates I dreamed of playing for Blackburn Rovers or Burn ley, Mr Herd (pictured) had

about 12 or 13 years old, I wanted to go into the pro fession. Buildings are all
been taken on full-time by highly-reputed Clitheroe- based architects Sunderland

ple." I t is not the first time the
promising trainee has worked a t the Lowergate firm. W h ile 'tak in g his GCSE's at what was then Riversmead School, now Bowland High School, he went to the company with a keen architectural interest for two spells of work expe
rience. He maintained his inter
est and took a BSc in Archi tecture at Dundee Universi
ty. Part of the degree was to complete a work placement
at an architect's office for a 12-month period, which he did, 'ag a in with the Clitheroe firm. Back in
. Dundee, he met his girl friend, Anthea Ng, who is currently taking a law degree a t the university.
The couple hope to get engaged once she has fin ished her degree and has moved to England to take an English law-conversion course. Having successfully completed his degree, Mr Herd went on to become a Bachelor of Architecture, following a further two-year course in Scotland. Now all the hard work
has paid off and he is already beginning to build up his own client base at the firm and looks to have a good future in the profes-
. sion. He is on track for qual ifying to RIBA, the profes sional body of architects, next October. At this stage
of his career he emphasises he would not want to be anywhere else. "It's a great company to work for. They are really helping me to show the ropes. All my friends and family are in the Ribble Valley - I love the area," he enthused. Mr David Sunderland,
Stuart's boss, with 30 years in the profession, comment ed: "It is particularly pleas ing to take someone on who has expressed an interest in us since they were at school. He has started well and I hope he will be on board to take us into the next millen nium."

Four years ago they took over the Black Bull and Mr Blades started his collection, which just mushroomed and mush roomed. "My wife thought some thing had gone wrong with my head when I first started, but eventually she came around and now is really supportive," says Mr Blades. "I think i t is wonderful," says .Mrs Blades. "To see people's faces when they first walk in to the museum is a real picture." Every exhibit has a story to tell
and each has been painstakingly collected at auctions and from sell ers by Mr Blades. Some exhibits have been donated to him by enthusiasts who have heard of the Black Bull's reputation , through

The roar recedes to leave the peaceful chiming of distant church bells and the echoes of children playing outside on a^summer's afternoon. Mr Blades smiles a sat isfied smile. I shake my head in dis belief and the regulars perched bn stools at the bar do not even bat an eyeiid.

Pastel work is on display
ATTENDING a r t classes in Hurst Green placed Mrs Magdalen Heller, of Stony- hurst, on the first rung of a ladder which has led to
exhibiting. Before she retired, 14
years ago, Mrs Heller was a teacher at a junior school in Preston. She attended the classes,
given by John Selby and was immediately attracted to watercolour. Today she works in pastel, portraying flowers and landscapes and also draws scenes of local villages in pen and ink. : Her work is on display at Clitheroe Library until the end of the month.
